Compensatory picks
According to this fanpost over on Mocking the draft, the Vikings would stand to earn conditional picks in the 3rd round (due to losing Sidney Rice), 4th round (due to losing Ray Edwards and Ben Leber) and in the 7th round. Now I know we won't know for sure for a few weeks, but this certainly is some good news. The Vikings can use all the early-mid round picks that they can get their hands on. Many of us also expect that the team will listen to offers for our #3 pick especially if USC left tackle Matt Kalil is off the board, but more importantly if the price is right.
Let's hope that GM Rick Spielman can turn these extra picks into viable football players that help this team move forward. I personally am hoping that the Vikings find at least 3 starters in this draft, one in the secondary and at least one on the offensive line, and perhaps the 3rd starter being a WR or LB.

that is not correct...
I did a full analysis of this here: http://www.dailynorseman.com/2012/1/2/2678268/2012-vikings-nfl-draft-compensatory-picks
we are almost guaranteed to get a 3rd and two 7th’s, NOT a 3rd, 4th and 7th. his analysis is off on Ben Leber and Devin Aromashodu IMO.
of course I hope i'm wrong and he's right...
but I don’t believe that’s the case.
Minnesota fans should be thanking St. Louis. That one year deal for $1.25 they gave Leber saved the comp pick for losing Edwards, a 4th.
Yeah... the MTD one seems to be missing a couple things:
Us signing Aromashodu and losing Leber being the notable pieces missing from the list.
I think DJSkillz’s seems more accurate.
No they are both mentioned in the post
The predictions above assume that Reggie Kelly, Devin Aromashadu, Steve Weatherford, and Maurice Stovall received minimum salaries….

Ahh, I see.
I didn’t notice that minimum salaried players didn’t count. If that’s the case an St. Louis did sign Leber for more than the minimum, we will be in a pretty good position to get both a 3 and a 4 (plus the 1-2 7s).
right...
I find that Leber point to be incorrect. Leber’s signing will merit a comp pick IMO in the “net value”. Just like Aromashodu will. Those 2 cancel each other out. And Ayodele/Johnson cancel out Edwards and TJack (other than a 7th rd “net value” pick for them). So you’re left with:
Rice-3rd compensatory pick
Net value 7th rd compensatory pick
Supplemental compensatory pick (we’d be the 3rd pick in the 8th rd and there will likely be less than 30 compensatory picks handed out based on net value).
I know, his version is much more optimistic

like i said...
i sure hope he’s right, but i’d bet a good chunk of change that he is not.
Any additional picks are welcome
to beef up the o line and the secondary

You know what...
I’m going to step back and apologize; NMVike you are correct. I had not previously found anything indicating that minimum salary players didn’t count, but doing the research again of compensatory picks over the last several years, that seems to be the case. Which is huge for the Vikings.
We should indeed get a 3rd rder (Rice), a 4th rder (Edwards), a 7th rder (net value), and another 7th rder (supplemental “8th rd” compensatory pick). Our total FA contracts lost total $79M while our total contracts signed total $19.5M. That is sure to get us a “net value” pick in the 7th rd. So based on all other compensatory picks/trades, etc., the Vikings’ 2012 draft picks should be:
First 5 rounds: #3, #35, #67, #99, #102, #133, #141
6th rd: #5 (Browns’ pick)
7th rd: #3 (ours), Giants’ 7th rder, Patriots’ 7th rder, 2 compensatory picks
So that’s 6 picks in the top 141 and 6 more picks in the 6th/7th rds. We should be able to get a lot of talent to help this team.
actually 7 picks in the top 141
But 5 picks in the top 102 is sweet! If things go really well, that COULD be 5 starters.

whoops, ya my math was off...
indeed. and that’s not even considering possible tradedowns, which spielman is apt to do.
