Week 8: Fantasy Football Studs and Duds

Congratulations! We’ve made it to the half-way point of the fantasy regular season. Most regular seasons are 13 or 14 games in length, so we’re over the hump. Hopefully your team sits above .500. If not, have no fear, you still have a mathematical shot at the playoffs as long as you have at least 1 win. And with the craziness and unpredictability that is fantasy football, it’s still anyone’s game. Just like in real life, sometimes all it takes is squeaking your way into the playoffs and then riding the hot player all the way to the Championship (just ask 2008 owners of DeAngelo Williams, or 2010 owners of Aaron Rodgers). So, who were the leaders of this past week? Did you start: Josh Freeman, Randall Cobb, Brandon Weedon, Santana Moss, Andre Roberts, Dustin Keller or Kevin Walter? And were you omnipresent enough to bench: Jason Witten, Torrey Smith, Calvin Johnson, Larry Fitzgerald, Christian Ponder, Trent Richardson and Dez Bryant? Hopefully you made some good calls, and followed my infinite wisdom on my correct calls, and avoided my idiocy on my incorrect calls. In any case, due to lack of time, this will be a quick and dirty version of Studs and Duds.

As I have mentioned before, these articles consider the ESPN and Yahoo standard scoring projections for players at each offensive position (QB, RB, WR and TE). I’m going to choose 2 players at every position to highlight: one as a "stud" and one as a "dud". A Stud is one who I think will significantly beat their projected total, and a Dud is one who I think will fall short of their projected total. It’s also worth mentioning that generally speaking, I’ll try to avoid players with injuries as it’s too easy to pick them as Duds if they’re unlikely to play. I will also keep a running tally at the end of the post each week to keep track of the accuracy of my predictions. If I can do better than 50% by season’s end, I’ll call it a success. So read on after the....the....(gasp....the jump button has been removed from the editor! NOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!) to see who my picks are for Week 8.

QB Stud: Philip Rivers vs CLE

Rivers has been up and down, and seems to be following the matchups to a tee. This week is a plus matchup against a bad Cleveland defense so he should do well, plus he’s coming off a BYE. Sure, Joe Haden is back, but that shouldn’t matter too much.

ESPN Projection: 14.9
Yahoo Projection: 16.22
CCNorsemen Prediction: Beats the ESPN Projection by 3 or more.

QB Dud: Tony Romo vs NYG

Romo is only the 24th ranked fantasy QB and hasn’t been able to get it going behind what is maybe the league’s worst offensive line. Bryant is dropping balls left and right, and they have no running game. The Giants also have a great pass rush. Me no likey.

ESPN Projection: 15.8
Yahoo Projection: 20.03
CCNorsemen Prediction: Falls short of Yahoo by at least 4 points.

RB Stud: Ahmad Bradshaw vs DAL

Andre Brown and David Wilson who? Bradshaw is no longer in the time-share that he once was with Brandon Jacobs. The Cowboys have an average run defense, so there’s no reason to think he won’t go nuts again.

ESPN Projection: 15.2
Yahoo Projection: 10.14
CCNorsemen Prediction: Beats Yahoo projection by 3 or more.

RB Dud: Doug Martin vs MIN

Guess who has a dominant run defense again? WE DO….we do.

ESPN Projection: 14.9
Yahoo Projection: 7.96
CCNorsemen Prediction: Falls short of ESPN Projection by at least 4.

WR Stud: Jerome Simpson vs TB

This is more of a gut call. Fact is, Simpson aint found s*** all year! But, I think he’s getting healthy, and the TB pass defense is pretty bad (plus their best CB is out). This is a high risk, high reward call, but I’m a homer, so…just go with it.

ESPN Projection: 5
Yahoo Projection: 3.04
CCNorsemen Prediction: Beats Yahoo Projection by 3 or more.

WR Dud: Calvin Johnson vs SEA

Psst, Megatron is dealing with the Madden Curse. Stay away, especially against Seattle.

ESPN Projection: 17.7
Yahoo Projection: 12.49
CCNorsemen Prediction: Falls short of ESPN Projection by at least 4.

TE Stud: Greg Olsen vs CHI

I love starting players against their old teams.

ESPN Projection: 4.5
Yahoo Projection: 3.61
CCNorsemen Prediction: Beats Yahoo projection 3 or more.

TE Dud: Jacob Tamme vs NO

Two words: Joel Dreessen.

ESPN Projection: 9.7
Yahoo Projection: 5.59
CCNorsemen Prediction: Falls short of ESPN Projection by at least 3.
