I am not one to make rash judgements but right now it is time for Ponder to be replaced by Joe Webb. I haven't really voiced my opinion around this site this year but from the very beginning I have been a vehement Ponder supporter. I have used every excuse in the book for him but there comes a boiling point. A point where you cannot stand what is literally the most boring passing offenses in the NFL. It is equivalent to watching paint dry. I can not stand the 3 yard passes 10 yards short of the first down. I can not stand every time Ponder gives up on throwing the football too soon and tries to be Barry Sanders only to just get back to the line of scrimmage. I can not stand the mundane flavor of this offense. However, before you write be off as an overzealous Webb supporter please listen to my other points.
Our WHOLE offense, not just Ponder, is dysfunctional. The combination of matador pass blocking and the receivers attempts to become siamese twins with the opposing defensive backs is a suicidal formula. Ponder is more often than not put into a situation where not even the best NFL QBs could succeed. Not even the biggest Ponder supporter can say that this early in his career he can throw receivers open. In fact we should not expect him too. He is still growing. But as I said before this offense as a WHOLE is becoming unwatchable.
I don't believe in the consolation that this is a rebuilding year. After such a dynamic start how can fans accept such a serious regression. As fans we have every right to want to win now and I'm sure this coaching staff agrees. While putting in Joe Webb won't fix the fact that our O-line, receivers, and coaching flat out suck, it will add a new, unpredictable, and exciting element to our offense. Right now this offense can not put up enough points to win games. Putting in Webb scrambling ability and big arm actually gives a shot at winning NOW.
To end my rant, while I want Ponder benched I also don't think he is a bust just yet. At this point we have nothing to lose my benching him and getting him out of the fiery hellhole that we call our offense. A benching could greatly benefit Ponder. He is nicked up right now and some time to heal would do him nothing but good as would being able to study more game tape. Maybe a benching would light a fire under his butt and raise his game to a new level. Who nows? All I know is that right now, without change, there is almost no reason to have any hope for the Vikings this year.
