The Playoff Scenario Thread

Posted this in the post-game thread, but I think it deserves further conversation:

The teams left in the Wildcard picture are:

Minnesota
Seattle
Dallas
New York
Washington
Chicago

If everyone wins out, we’ll be on the outside looking in, with the playoffs being:

Atl
SF
GB
Was/Dal (they play week 17 for the division title if they both win week 16)
Sea
NYG

If we start with every team fighting for the wildcard winning, we can backtrack to see what games need to be lost for us to get in.

So, IF we win out, we will make the playoffs if:
NYG loses 1 game (doesn’t matter which)

or

Seattle loses 2 games

Both Dallas and Washington can end up at 10-6, as they play the last game against each other. So, assuming Dallas and Washington win in week 16, the only team we care about in the East is the Giants, the other two teams in the east will be out of the playoffs at 9-7 and the division champion.

Basically, we need the Giants to go 9-7 or the Seahawks to go 9-7 while winning out.

If 9-7 gets you in the playoffs, we need:
Dallas to lose 2 games (8-8), NYG to lose 2 games (8-8), and Chicago to lose 1 game.

If 8-8 gets you in the playoffs (lol), we need:
Chicago to lose 2 games, NYG to lose 2 games, Dallas to lose 2 games, New Orleans to lose 1 game and St. Louis to lose 1 game.

Bottom line is: the more games we win, the less help we need. We still need help if we win out, but there are some fairly feasible scenarios that would allows to get in (NYG losing to Baltimore, Washington losing to Dallas).

Here's the tool to play around with various playoff scenarios:
