What I want to see this offseason

Bear with me here, although this season is not even over, we all know there are some glaring issues with the Vikes, mostly with the the offense. Whether its Ponder or the WR corps, (some days its really hard to tell which is actually more responsible for the inept passing game) there are big changes that need to be made. (You can also throw Bill Musgrave in this, some of his decision-making choices with the play calling have been very WTF at times this season, but that's a whole other story.) Looking ahead, whether its after next week or sometime in mid January or (god willing) In February, there is an off season to look forward to and work to be done by the Vikings.

So let me first address the very LARGE purple elephant in the room: Ponders play. He started out the season strong, regressed during the losing streak, and has recently come back, not as strong as earlier, but at least he is doing what is asked of him. Although this is my first post, I have been coming to this website often, and I have to say that there are far too many people who are far too hard on Ponder. We have to remember what Ponder is, he is a 2nd year player who has not played a full season. The learning curve for QBs is somewhere around 3-4 years of maturity before they are fully prepared to lead a team, at least that the old philosophy. Looking around the league recently, the thought process is changing with rookies like Luck and Bobby 3 sticks, and Matt Ryan and Joe Flacco having successful rookie years as well. So it isn't unreasonable to think that Ponder should be ahead of those guys at this point in his short career. Those guys do have a decent amount of weapons around them to help. Ponder does not. He does have that one guy, Peterson, who I think is actually a terminator sent back in time to save the Vikings franchise because the world is at stake, but I digress. Ponder also does have Rudolph, and Harvin, Ohh wait... IR. Needless to say there's not much there to help. I have been just as hard on Ponder from time to time. I think his football intelligence is a little bit too low at this point, he has yet to show any real true leadership, and he has an incredible case of happy feet in the pocket more times than not. The good thing is those things can be fixed and come with age and experience. Having the right tools also will help with the development....

Which leads me to the true point of this entirely too long post. The Vikings need to trade for Larry Fitzgerald. Send the first round pick to AZ in exchange for a top flight WR. This may be an especially glaring must do if the rumors about Harvin being on the way out are true. What led me to this were a few points. First, this years draft class is not as good as the last few seasons were, and the first round is geared especially towatrds Defense, which is an area i am very comfortable with at the time and the general thought is there is nowhere to go but upwards for this unit. There are very few defensive needs outside of building depth. Depth is nice, but the depth of our defense has been great. Needless to say there is no reason to draft for defense. I dont even think there are any WRs who are projected first round talent in this draft. Second point, Fitzgerald is a Minnesota boy, he grew up here as a Viking fan and if what Papa Fitzgerald says is true, Larry would love to come play in Minnesota someday. If the Vikings could negotiate a new contract with him, since he is making Oprah money right now, this would be extremely do-able. The Vikings may even have the cap space to take on his contract if needed. My final point is that hes only 29. He has plenty of good, productive seasons ahead of him. Lets make it happen!
