Adrian Peterson Goes Over 2,000 Rushing Yards

Andy King

With a 20-yard run at the 11:42 mark of the third quarter of the season finale against the Green Bay Packers, Minnesota Vikings' running back Adrian Peterson became the seventh running back in NFL history to rush for 2,000 yards or more in a single season. He currently stands at 2,0015, which is the fourth-highest total in NFL history.

We will update Peterson's total after the game is over, but the MVP candidate and undisputed best running back in the National Football League has etched his name into the NFL record books. Next in his sights is the record of 2,105 yards in a season set by Los Angeles Rams running back Eric Dickerson back in 1984.

These are the six other running backs in NFL history that have rushed for over 2,000 yards in a season. As previously mentioned, after the game we will update this to reflect Peterson's standing.

Player Season Yardage
Eric Dickerson, Rams 1984 2,105
Jamal Lewis, Ravens 2003 2,066
Barry Sanders, Lions 1997 2,053
Terrell Davis, Broncos 1998 2,008
Chris Johnson, Titans 2009 2,006
O.J. Simpson, Bills 1973 2,003*
