An Open Thread Because We Haven't Done An Open Thread In A While
Yes, ladies and gentlemen, it's about time for another open thread, wherein you can discuss whatever you wish with your fellow fans of the Minnesota Vikings. As always, I'll start with a topic, and if you want to stick to it, you can, but otherwise feel free to delve into any realm you desire.
So I'm curious, members of the Daily Norseman audience, which television shows you're into at the moment. I'll give you three that are taking up a decent amount of space on my DVR.
Storage Wars (A&E) - I like this show. If you asked me to explain why I like this show, I'm relatively sure that I wouldn't be able to do it. . .but I like this show. I think Barry Weiss is hilarious, and the interactions between some of the buyers are pretty funny. Does that about cover it? Yuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuup!
Forensic Files (tru TV) - It fascinates the heck out of me that a crime scene investigator can find something as seemingly innocuous as a fiber off of a sweater or a couple of hairs and connect that all the way back to an individual to be able to solve a crime. You know, not in an hour like they do on CSI or anything, but it still gets done. (Incidentally, the direction that tru TV has taken recently is pretty awful. . .it used to be shows like Forensic Files and other crime shows, but now it seems like it's just 27 reruns of crap like World's Dumbest every single day.)
The Big Bang Theory (CBS/TBS) - I'm actually kind of bummed that I didn't get into watching this show earlier than I did. I started catching the reruns on TBS a couple of weeks ago, and have seen a few recent episodes on CBS. This show is hilarious. . .and if you don't know somebody like Sheldon Cooper (and, rest assured, I do), you'll find someone like that eventually.
So, those are a few of mine. . .and, with that, the Open Thread is open for business!

Not always
Plus you know the money the claim they can get for a lot of those items is no where near what it actually sells for.
True That
They all over value everything. Im glad they show the true values at the end of the show

Storage wars
is awesome. Listening to Brandy and Jared bicker is hilarious, and Dave always winning is annoying, but understandable. Barry is always good for a laugh.
meanwhile, the show Storage Hunters on TruTV is the worst writing ever. Totally looks staged and the interactions are very forced. No one wins an auction by trying to ‘intimidate the person physically’ … annoying

Archer is a few episodes into the latest season
Possibly the greatest show ever. Key and Peele is actually pretty solid on Comedy Central right after Tosh.0. Check it out. It’s a little fresher Chappelle’s show is what its like.
White Horn Gold Pants
Archer
Archer is a show that you have to watch a few episodes before you start to appreciate the humor. I still think the two best episodes is the episode where they are in the air boat with the gator finale. The other superb episode is the girl they are assigned to protect.
We have been the ones that have not been watching How I Met Your Mother. Probably the only show in a while where I find the main character to be the one of the lesser likeable characters. The Barnacle is hilarious!
Storm Chasers….I’m beginning to wonder if some of it is more for ratings rather than there everyday conversations.
Good point
I understand your point about “Ted”. I would label him a central character, not “the” main character. If you want to think about Friends(not trying to compare the two, but they have their similarities, but HIMYM isn’t as cheesy as Friends), but in Friends, I would say Ross is probably the central character, but its always focused on the group.
I couldn’t even tell you my favorite Archer episode. I just got into it this summer, I started to record the older episodes and I think I’ve seen them all now, but the one on the train this season was pretty solid I though. WHY ARE WE ON THE ROOF OF THE TRAIN?
White Horn Gold Pants
I dunno...I think it depends on what your sense of humor is.
A buddy of mine had me watch “Skytanic” (the Season 1 episode about the bomb on the “rigid airship”) and I was sold on the show by about 5 minutes in. I didn’t know what the “danger zone” reference was yet and I already knew that when I did I would love it.
If fresher means up to date, yeah
Key and Peele is great, but Chappelle Show is the greatest comedy central show ever. Maybe for the sole reason that Chappelle Show was original and nothing had been what it was.
If we can't laugh at ourselves, Packer fans will call us crybabies and we will be forced to kick their tooth in. I really don't want to go to jail (again).

I have been watching the T-Wolves
When I use to live in the cities I went to games all the time, and now I have FSN again so I can watch them. I know it’s not really a tv show but I don’t really enjoy watching sitcoms or reality tv. I like to waste my spare time on my xbox instead lol

My FSN goes south to St. Louis/KC so I can't watch any Twins or Twolves which sucks.
Unless they’re on ESPN/TNT, I can’t watch them.
White Horn Gold Pants
that annoys me as well
I don’t really care to watch the Cubs or Cardinals. Chicago is 5 hours away, and St. Louis is 6. Minneapolis is 3. The twins (typically) are just as relevant as the Cardinals, and way more relevant than the Cubs, but yet i can never watch them on TV.

Justified ftw
Justified rocks. In addition to that great show the following (in no particular order) are taking up my free moments:
Walking Dead
Luck
Archer
30 Rock (thanks Netflix!)
Breaking Bad (got into this show late and am still working through a backload on the DVR)
Right now, Supernatural
Castle and been rewatching Farscape on the Netflix. I don’t have cable though so it has to be on Netflix or the web for me to catch it.
The Vikes aren't in a remodeling or reconstruction they are in a burn the place down and start praying they don't mimic the Lions rebuilding process.
Old nerd here,
Looking forward to Mass Effect 3 to come out, in the mean time filling in with some Skyrim. I really don’t watch anything on regular TV except football. Now that the season is over…. my TV sets silently waiting for the fall.
The trailer they ran for ME3 last night on Walking Dead...
…was so awesome that my non-gamer wife thought it was a trailer for a sci-fi movie done with motion capture.
Yeah man ME3
Should get me through til Tiger Woods PGA 13 comes out. This time of year is sports hell for me until baseball starts

Deadliest Catch and the Red Wings
I am a huge fan of Deadliest Catch I love the drama and danger. I will admit that I cried when Captain Phil died. Then there is my beloved Red Wings the only non Minnesota Pro team I root for which you can blame on my grandfather who was a Red Wings fan way back before Minnesota had any NHL team. They are my last hope for the season because as we all know the Twins and the Vikes didn’t give us much to cheer for not that it stopped us from cheering. I’ve been a Viking and Twin fan since the mid 70’s so I’ve seen good and bad (Les Steckel comes to mind) and I’ll never quit cheering no matter how many times my heart is broken but for now go Red Wings.
Jeremy Lin...aka the anti-Dolan of the NY Knicks.
Watching college hoops as March Madness approaches and the occaisonal Knicks game if televised nationally. Currently watching Walking Dead and looking forward to Mad Men’s return.
"Men are creatures with two legs and eight hands. - Jayne Mansfield
Big Bang Theory is great
and yeah, I knew a anal retentive Sheldon type back in my car wrenching days. The Fiance likes “How I met your mother”, which I will say isn’t all that bad. As far as other channels, always addicted to DIY, and the customary History, Science and Mitary channels. Though I will catch a Scooby Doo at times.
And I’m proud to say, got the Fiance hooked on both BatleStar Galactica’s and even the Buck Rogers from the late 70’s, cheesy as that show is.
Gentlemen! You can't fight in here, this is a war room!
Waiting for Game of Thrones
Recently discovered Pawn Stars.
Almost anything on Velocity. Mecum Auctions, What’s My Car Worth,Chasing Classic Cars, Wheeler Dealer very watchable.
Nothing on Network TV
. All the dramas on HBO are so much better than even most movies (True Blood, Boardwalk Empire). They’ve kinda ruined me to everything else
FSU and Heat basketball,
Top Gear (american and english), and How I Met Your Mother is really all I have until spring. HIMYM really takes time to fully appreciate though. If you jump right into it, you probably won’t like it.
If we can't laugh at ourselves, Packer fans will call us crybabies and we will be forced to kick their tooth in. I really don't want to go to jail (again).

HIMYM is on my Netflix list.
I’ll prob start it up when I finish with 30 Rock. The little of seen of it on syndication or CBS has seemed promising.
I love TBBT
It’s one of the very, very few shows everyone in my house can agree on. The only disagreement is who I am more like. I think Leonard (as do more of my friends), but my gf insists I’m a Sheldon. But yeah, I am an enormous geek. Still, the kids love it, and they are not particularly nerdy. Not at all compared to me, that’s for sure…
I also really like The Mentalist.
In my DVR right now
I have the big bang theory too. but i also have the office, parks and recreation (those two shows are hilarious), Its always sunny in Philadelphia, NFL Total Access, and Through the Wormhole with Morgan Freeman (great show if you like science)

Archer is awesome...
… but I also watch Supernatural, Castle, Body of Proof, The Mentalist, Family Guy and American Dad.
Also dig out Fatscape, Firefly, Faulty Towers, and a number of other old British comedies.

Storage wars s addictive
Other shows I’m into:
Comic Book Men – its about a group of funny guys more than Comics, which don’t really interest me.
Downton Abbey – um. Yeah. Manly.
Life’s Too Short – Warwick Davis seemed to be doing David Brent in the first episode, but it was still fun. Not as uncomfortable as the Britsh Office but funny.
Impractical Jokers – funny twist on a hidden camera show. In that it’s actually funny.
comic book men
is pretty funny, though i’m a huge kevin smith fan.
I also like Fringe and Alcatraz (JJ Abrams fan)
Justified is amazing, also Californication
Weeds, True Blood, Dexter and Boardwalk Empire in the summer and fall
when asked by Dan Patrick if his name alluded to not making quick decisions in the pocket, Ponder calmly replied "As crazy as it sounds, my mom's maiden name is actually Superbowlwinner. All one word"
Season 4 of Top Shot
Pawn Stars
That’s about it as far as current shows. I was into Storage Wars about 3 months ago but it got old quick. I tried to watch Big Bang once but I didn’t find it funny at all, actually found the main character very annoying. I was into Decoded last season so I’ll be looking forward to the new season later in the year. Thats about it.
"At this point, what we got to lose, right? So we might as well throw caution to the wind and hit people in the face."

How could I not mention Criminal Minds?
I’m not as hooked as I was a few years ago when I first discovered it, but I still watch it regularly. Especially the marathons on A & E.

I spend most of my viewing time
Lamenting how History and Discovery really don’t have much in common with their names anymore and shipped a lot of the shows that deal with actual History or Science to offshoot channels.
That said, I still watch Pawn Stars, Top Gear (both the original and American versions), the odd episode of Modern Marvels if it’s on, Mythbusters if I can catch it, a show on Animal Planet called Big Cat Diary, Planet Earth if I catch when either History or AP is doing a special.
On the brain rotting side, I usually tune into Adult Swim on CN and i’m also partial to Adventure Time and Star Wars the Clone Wars series.
I personally think
The History Channel is one of the last “educational” stations to actually keep to it’s namesake. Granted shows like top shot and top gear make me wonder sometimes, not that I don’t like them they just don’t seem relevant to history. Nat Geo is a great channel as well, but The Learning Channel has gone waaaaaayyyy down in credibility if you ask me.

It is historical though
Unlike topshot, which has absolutely no historical value to it whatsoever. Though I do not care for the Ancient Aliens show myself.

Can't disagree there
Didn’t care for the show personally but they did use historical records to base their assumptions. Just got tired of EVERYTHING humanity has done, it was aliens. According to them, it’s physically impossible for early humans to have harnessed fire and developed agriculture which let them settle down in one spot and spark civilization.
I think thats why they eventually moved the show to H2 a few months ago. People were getting alienated by the extremeness of the views they showed on the show.
That reminds me
Of when South Park absolutely skewered the History Channel for that last season.
WERE THERE ALIENS AT THE FIRST THANKSGIVING!?

All the South Park episodes are available online for free (legal) streaming.
TLC is the MTV of education channels now.
At least Court TV had the sense to change their name when they broadened their programming beyond court/legal shows.
Yeah
I can understand the need to make profit and that might be hampered by providing only learning centered programs….but come on they are so off base, renaming the channel would be a good idea for them

Agreed
The Learning Channel is terrible. . .it started when they picked up “Trading Spaces” and it’s been nothing but downhill since then. (Although, on the occasions when I watched it with my wife, I did love me some Genevieve. Good Minnesota girl, you know.)
I like the History Channel, though. . .big fan of Ice Road Truckers, even though that’s not terribly “historical.”

Walking Dead
Lori and the other females on the show try their best to make me stop watching the show:

But then they give me hope with Rick becoming a real bad-ass as the show goes on:

Also: Used to watch Justified…before they started asking you to pay for watching it on “FREE On Demand service”!
I still like Walking Dead...
…but you are correct, the character development has struggled much of the time. They do the action/suspense thing well, but the talky scenes…sometimes they drag.
