Kansas City Chiefs Sign CB Stanford Routt; Brandon Carr To Shake Loose?
When I did my list of free agents that I thought the Minnesota Vikings should pursue a while back, the top name on my list was Kansas City Chiefs' cornerback Brandon Carr. One of the issues with that, however, is whether or not the Chiefs would use the franchise tag on him or on wide receiver Dwayne Bowe.
However, with a move that the Chiefs made today, it appears that they've made their decision.
The Chiefs signed former Oakland Raiders cornerback Stanford Routt on Monday, according to our friends at Arrowhead Pride. While the terms of the deal have not been disclosed, it appears that the Chiefs are content to let Carr hit the open market and potentially use their franchise tag on Bowe instead.
ESPN's John Clayton is already speculating that the Vikings could be in the Brandon Carr business when free agency starts on March 13.
I'm wondering if the Vikings and Titans go after Brandon Carr because he fits better into zone schemes.
— John Clayton (@ClaytonESPN) February 20, 2012
As I've already expressed, I certainly hope that the Vikings make Carr a priority target, but there are plenty of other cornerbacks that are going to hit the market in a couple of weeks that would help this team immensely, too.

Excellent topic Chris
I am seriously concerned about the Vikings ability to attract any of the top free agents at any positions. I fear that we are going to be severely disappointed in the free agents that are eventually signed. Of course they can work out great while the top guys struggle. But if you had your choice you would want to sign at least two top free agents.
The Vikings could not even get Routt to visit!
That is a sign. It could be a sign of things to come too. Maybe not though?
I just think that after going 6-10 and then 3-13, having uncertainty at the QB spot, AP most likely not going to be back 100% next year (and maybe never), having serious issues at the WR spot, other positions needing severe upgrades, and the coach probably having to show something to save his job, that all these things combined are going to make it really tough to attract top free agents.
I mean I would not want to come to Minnesota unless they were paying much more than anyone else and after I checked out all my other opportunities.
Now in the case of Routt, it very well could be that he knew he would not fit in the cover 2 scheme so did not bother to come to Minnesota to at least see what they had to say. I mean he did go to Buffalo who is not in that much of a better situation than the Vikings.
I don’t know. I want to be positive and I do put top free agents in my off season scenarios. But when I think about it realistically I do not see them being able to sign any of the top guys we want.
I think we could be looking at Richard Marshall, Thomas DeCoud, Dan Connor, Laurent Robinson, and lesser ranked free agents. I do not mind that too much though.
We have to sign some players that is for sure.
I still have hope that they can sign at least one or two top free agents.
Brandon Carr would be great. Brandon Flowers signed this new deal last year …
9/16/2011: Signed a six-year, $49.35 million contract. The deal contains $22 million guaranteed, including a $10 million signing bonus. $11 million of Flowers’ guaranteed money is guaranteed for both skill and injury, although the other $11 million is guaranteed solely for injury. Another $1.25 million is available through escalators applicable to the final year. Flowers is eligible for annual $250,000 workout bonuses in seasons two through six. 2012: $5.75 million, 2013: $7.35 million, 2014: $5.25 million (+ $2 million reporting bonus), 2015: $6.25 million (+ $2 million reporting bonus), 2016: $6.5 million (+ $2 million reporting bonus), 2017: Free Agent
-————————————————————————————————————————-
I think that if the Vikings want Carr they are going to have offer more than this even though Flowers had slightly better numbers.
I think they should offer something close to or slightly north than 6 year 60 mil deal. Of course the last few years will be large numbers (back loaded contract) but achievable if his performance is worthy.
My strategy would be to overpay a couple of players right off the bat. That way other players see that the Vikings are paying money and more importantly, are getting some good players to buy in to what the Vikings are doing.
I am worried but still have hope! I think the team needs to be more aggressive!
I don't think guys loke Carr, Garcon, or Branch ar out of the question
Guys love playing for Frazier apparently, and there is a lot of good talent here. We just need to break the bank.

That could be but they could not even get Routt to visit
Regardless of whether or not they signed the dude, he would not even come in to talk.
That is a bad sign for me especially after it was reported the Vikings were interested. All players know they most likely are starting if they sign with the Vikings.
So I do not know if guys love to play for Frazier. Apparently, Cedric Griffin is not too high on playing for the Vikings anymore if you believe some of things that were written when he cleaned out his entire locker.
I wonder how interested the Vikings were.
like how much interest did we show? Were we putting on the full court press or were we just calling and asking?

Probably the latter
I still believe they will get one defensive back either at safety or corner. If they are going to spend one “big bullet” then corner is where I would look as well as WR.
I hear your concern
But do not share it. At the end of the day, our record last year will be very low on the list of things free agents are considering. Honestly, money is probably on the list two or three times before our record shows up. So is opportunity, and the Vikings have lots of that, as you said.
I think the team needs to be more aggressive!
More aggressive than what? Free agency hasn’t even started yet. Than last year? Free agency didn’t start until right before training camp and we were hamstrung by the cap. The year before? We had our hands tied by the stupid “Final Four” rule.
Truth is, Wilf has historically been very aggressive in signing players that the front office wants. Or have you forgotten about him sending his private plane to “jet” Winfield out of a “done deal” in New York? We’ll be fine in the aggression department.
yeah the whole
‘play your old team’ came into play for him, I think

My thoughts exactly
It’s disappointing that we couldn’t even get Routt to visit, but my hope is that it was scheme-based, rather than simply “The Vikings suck, I’m not playing there” kind of thing. Players can be motivated by lots of things: money, coaches, other players, team success, scheme, etc. We’ll never know what makes players sign on with one team over another, and we’ll never know exactly what Spielman is thinking either. Although it’s sure fun to try to guess.
Anyway, we’ll have our shot at a much bigger pool, and hopefully attract a good player that is the perfect fit for our scheme.

We could always go the Seattle Seahawks route

Routt
Was contacted by the Vikings and several other teams. As far as I’m aware he only visited Buffalo, Cincinnati and Kansas City. Perhaps the Vikings felt it unecessary to match the $31.5 million three year deal the Chiefs offered for the guy who gave the second most passing TD’s and led the league in penalties. He is due to make $11 million this year with the Chiefs.
On the flip side the Chiefs now have around $70 million invested in Brandon Flowers and Routt so there is almost no chance of them signing Carr. (They are also paying Eric Berry $60 million!) I’m not trying to brush this aside as a non-issue because I think that the Vikings really do have a challenge in convincing top FA’s to sign here.
"none of us is a fan of the team" - Judd Zulgad (also fabricated the "schism" reports of 09')
Routt did not sign for 31.5 mil and the Vikings had no chance to match since he did not visit
Here is what he signed for …
2/20/2012: Signed a three-year, $19.6 million contract. The deal contains $6.5 million guaranteed, including a $4 million signing bonus. 2012: $2 million, 2013-2014: Under Contract, 2015: Free Agent
… the Chiefs are also trying hard to keep Carr too.
http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2012/02/21/pioli-says-chiefs-hope-to-re-sign-carr-bowe/
They have a boat load of money available to spend as well so there is no real reason for them to not be able to keep Carr unless he wants too much money. I think he will stay with KC when all is said and done.
I am betting that the Vikings will not sign many top free agents and will be lucky to get one.
I must have read it wrong
looks like he was released from a $31.5 million deal

For the love of Jeebus sign him
We need to break the bank this offseason at the corner, saftey, and reciever positions

I'd prefer not to break the bank
I would rather get super stars in the draft and sign reliable young journey men through FA. Wasting a bunch of money on a couple studs is what got us in this mess to start with.
The Vikes aren't in a remodeling or reconstruction they are in a burn the place down and start praying they don't mimic the Lions rebuilding process.
But what are the odds of finding multiple superstars in the draft?
I’d rather have young guys who have established themselves than young guys who might not even make the roster. I do think we need to build through the draft, but if we can find a few young stars at positions of need through free agency, then I think we need to pull the trigger. But like I said, they need to be young. We got where we are by signing old superstars trying to make one last run at a title.

agree but disagree
there is no reason to spend to get over the hump until you are at the hump. the Vikes in my opinion are at least 2 probably 3 years away from competing for a super bowl. id like to see them break the bank at that time, doing so is kind of pointless unless you are absolutely sold on a guy.
spending in free agents is not what got us into this mess, and there is nothing wrong with doing so but the timing has to right. like it or not there are Windows of opportunity with every team, call them business cycles if you will. some of you seem to think we should be challenging for a super bowl every year and that just is not realistic. look at 98 and 99 those were definetly Windows then they closed and the rebuilding started. we are in a similar rebuilding phase now. we had a mix of veterans and youth that put us in the nfc championship a couple years ago, many of the veterans have moved on or will be moving on. we are nearing the bottom of our cycle and will be moving up over the next two years. when you reach a point on the curve where you near the top that is where you make the big move to get over that hump. we did it with Favre and Berrian and it almost worked. the pack is rarely a team that does this but when they do the timing and player are right, case in point reggie white and Charles woodsen , both acquisitions won them super bowls. over spending for like rout makes no sense given where we are and given the type of player he is. if we break the bank now it better be for a woodsen type player who is going to contribute at a high level for years. over spending for Berrian was justifiable given where we were on our curve, doing so now for a guy like him (routt) is stupidity.

just heard this on my way home
i, too, have been hoping the Vikes pursue Carr — this move could certainly indicate the Chiefs are not making progress on a long-term deal with Carr, and plan to tag Bowe.
here’s hoping that’s the case — and double hoping Carr will land in MN.

Depends on Finnegan.
If the Titans let him walk, they’ll definitely be going after Carr.
If they keep him (Franchise-tagged or otherwise), I don’t know that they’ll have enough in the cap to fit Carr in as well.
Finnegan’s looking to get paid big money though, and the two sides aren’t even close to a deal from what I’ve read recently.
odds we get carr finnegan and move antoine to safety?

I don't know why people keep suggesting this
Not many players successfully transition to a new position so late in their career. If Winfield returns with the Vikings he will be a slot corner since there is a clause in his contract that will lower his pay if he takes a smaller percentage of snaps. They will need to use this clause to their advantage to clear cap space for free agents, who will likely need to be overpaid.
"none of us is a fan of the team" - Judd Zulgad (also fabricated the "schism" reports of 09')
it keeps being suggested
because our safeties are THAT BAD, if we had 2 solid corners i dont see a reason not to move him to a spot where he wouldnt have to carry the team. remember the game against the packers this year where they beat us by 3 i think? they scored 2 touchdowns on broken coverages by our safeties, if winfield was back there i doubt those wouldve happened. either way i think he was injured that game so it doesnt really matter

Soo....
Explain this to me… How do the Chiefs sign this guy outside of Free Agency?
Maybe I am crazy, but I could have swore that all players cut during this period would be subject to the free agency process.
Is there something else making FA shy away?
With the trouble that has been bestowed upon our Vikings, is there something else that is making top FA or coaches shy away from the Vikings? Other than a few names mentioned nothing seems to be popping up as the Vikings being a front runner or favorite for anyone. I certainly hope not, and management opens the wallet and we can get a couple of good FA in purple
Who really wants to live in Minneapolis...
Nothing against the city, but hot as blazes, cold as nuts and the spring and fall are when the Mosquitos start man hunting season.. :p At least it beats north Texas though. :D

Well free agency has not even started
Stanford Routt was cut so he was free to find a new team immediately. If players don’t want to come to Minnesota because of the cold than they have taken A LOT for granted. Free agents are important but I would be more concerned about the draft. The Vikings have been trying to fill holes with free agents for far too long, and the roster has aged significantly as an effect.
I’m trying to stay optimistic, but I think we all know this will take more than one year to fix. The Vikings can sign some quality free agents this year, maybe not the biggest names but they would still be much better than what the Vikings had last year. If there is improvement next season, free agents will be more attracted to signing here (we might even have more cap space by then, with the influx of rookies).

Hey Vikings Fans
The Chiefs did make news today. But we have a little problem in KC that might benefit the Vikings. His name is Matt Cassel.
I myself would be greatly interested in RGIII as a QBOTF for the Chiefs. I was under the impression that Vikings management was willing to trade the overall #3 pick for the right price.
What is that price?
The Chiefs have a chip called Brandon Carr now that could be Tagged and traded if someone was interested in that.
If Not Carr himself, the Chiefs could tag and trade him to other CB wanting teams and possibly land a 1st for trade.
Would two 2012 1sts and a 3rd from the Chiefs (possibly picks 11/12, 27 and 75/76 be sufficient to move to the 3rd overall in yalls eyes?
We're talking QB here so you would have to throw in a 2013 3rd rd pick as well
And then I would deal But I don’t think we want to trade out of the top ten. I guess you can say it all depends on what we do in FA.
Its not a big jump out of the top 10
Just one selection…
If the Chiefs offered that up.. I think I would take it.
But I’m not Spielman, who, more than likely, is going to be trying to get some team to give up a bounty of picks for RGIII like Atlanta did for Julio Jones.

Brandon Carr...
… cannot be franchised and traded. He would need to be signed to a contract first, meaning he would have a say on who he was traded to.
Did I miss something with Routt? Have the Vikings come out and confirmed that he declined to visit? Routt is an ok corner whose play over the past season was up and down. If the Vikings are going to bring in a couple of prized free agents this year, then I want them to be better than what Routt has to offer. Brandon Carr would certainly fit that description, but this team is more than a couple of quality players from being able to reach the playoffs. For that reason alone, I do not want the Vikings to ‘break the bank’ this off season, I want them to put into place a structure and team we can build upon. It would be wonderful – and not entirely impossible – that the Vikings make the playoffs, but I’d rather they be in a strong position to continue improving next off season too rather than going all in this year.

Carr and Stevie Johnson would be my ideal FA class.
Signing those two would fill two of our biggest needs and could probably be done for about 2/3rds of the cap space before vets like Hutch, Griffen, and Hererra are cut.
Getting Carr and Johnson would be great and then the Vikings would only have to grab a LT, S, and MLB in the draft to upgrade all five of their biggest weaknesses. I think I’m getting optimistic about the Vikings for the first time in a while : )

likewise!!
i’m really digging the thought of Bobby Wagner at MLB, though i’d still nab Casey Hayward in the 2nd before a Safety… the whole Chris Cook situation really throws a wrench in things. (plus, i’ve got a massive man crush on TJ McDonald in next year’s draft…)

I'm hoping for Markelle Martin in the 3rd.
I’ve seen him projected anywhere from late second to mid-third so hopefully he’ll still be around when the Vikings pick in the 3rd. For MLB I wouldn’t mind stealing Stephen Tulloch from Detroit. He’s supposed to be one of the best LBs in coverage and god knows the team needs that. I think Detroit’s stuck right up against the cap so it’d be a good year to poach some divisional talent from them.
by CanadianViking on Feb 21, 2012 7:45 PM CST up reply actions
I do not think that is true at all
Once a player is under contract then a team can trade him to any team they want. I know that Hutchinson has a no trade clause but I doubt that Carr would get one.
If the Chiefs franchise Carr then he would probably sign his deal soon to ensure it is guaranteed just like Greenway did last year. If he gets hurt doing his off season workouts they can rescind the offer.
If they tag him I am betting he will sign the deal very soon. Then he can be traded anywhere they want and then it is up to him to report or hold out.
rout
stop the crying over Rout crap. Dude was cut by the Raiders which screams dysfunction. he was the most penalized cb in the NFL last year and up a ton of TD. I’m thanking my lucky stars we didn’t ended up with this guy, and was pissed when u heard we might be interested. the fact that he didn’t visit here only means that our interest wasn’t that strong. Thank God. don’t for one second think that guy is going to kc for any other reason than $. for guys like that its not about the city or chance to win its about getting paid. so please stop this irrational stupidity worrying about us not being to get him here. if our management sent out a feeler and then Hung up when they heard his asking price, good for them.
