What Was Your Favorite Greg Camarillo Moment?
Pioneer Press beat reporter and Holy Trinity member Jeremy Fowler has reported that the Vikings will not be re-signing WR Greg Camarillo, who was acquired from Miami via a trade shortly before the 2010 season began.
At the time, Sidney Rice was either getting ready to undergo or had just had surgery on his hip, and the Vikings found themselves in need of a WR. The thought at the time was to move Percy Harvin outside with Bernard Berrian, have Camarillo slide into the slot, and truth be told, I thought it was a good move at the time.
The Vikings gave up CB Benny Sapp, Camarillo filled a need and was coming off of back to back 50+ catch seasons in Miami, and I thought he was going to have a Wes Welker-type season with Brett Favre throwing to him. Well, maybe not Welker like, but I thought 50 catches was almost a given.
Yeah, that never happened. For whatever reason, Camarillo never really found a role in Minnesota, which is kind of baffling to me. He's a hard worker, catches everything thrown his way, is by all accounts a good locker room guy, and Lord knows outside of Percy Harvin the Vikings have needed quality wide receivers the last couple of seasons.
So we bid a fond farewell to Greg Camarillo. Good luck Cammy, and if nothing else, I'll remember that you hustled your ass off whenever you were on the field:

Sadly not surprising
But given the fact, as you stated, that he went largely unused, I can understand why they aren’t re-signing him. Still baffles me why they didn’t use him more. He was a solid route-runner and some great hands and always worked his butt off. Sure he wasn’t going to break off a 70yd TD most times, but he was there when the chains needed to move.
Damn.
I’ve been a Cammy fan ever since he showed up, and kept expecting some bigger things… but yeah, I can’t say I’m surprised. If you can’t find a way to utilize a guy in your game plan (although like Ted said, I can’t understand WHY that happened…), then there’s no sense keeping him around.
My favorite moments of him, aside from the above clip (which should be everyone’s favorite moment, if only Randy had had said work ethic…), would be him joining forces with Christian Ponder against Green Bay game one to become a third down conversion machine. After that game I thought to myself “FINALLY, Cammy’s found his place”, but alas, he soon pretty much dissapeared again.

Yeah, after that GB game
I thought he finally found a place and a role. Just a weird dynamic all the way around.

I'm at a loss, too.
Because I have NO idea why they didn’t use him more.
Aromashodu over Camarillo? Please, that’s another dopey reason we lost last year. Aro doesn’t have the hands, the route-running, or the anything else that fits either a West Coast Offense or a balanced attack.
Another baffling move in the saga of the unknown…

Aromashodu is a free agent as well
No guarantees he comes back, either.

Once Jenkins got hurt
Then we switched to Aro, when it looked like we should go with Cammy.
In all fairness, even though he dropped a LOT of passes, Aro is not bad. He just fits a different kind of offense than the one the Vikings were running.
If he stays I’m not sure how the Vikings can improve in the passing game if they focus on guys like him instead of guys who are better for our system like Cammy.

Camarillo is pretty slow.
We have enough recievers who struggle to get open. Don’t need to hold onto an aging one to boot. We have our ‘sure-handed’ reciever already in Michael Jenkins, who fills the role we thought Camarillo would step into in the first place.

Not surprised
I like the guy, but he isn’t a playmaker. Get some playmakers!

How can you expect a guy to be a playmeker when they don't get him the ball?
His lack of success here in Minnesota rests solely on the coaching staff for not getting him involved in the game more.

This!
I feel we just shot ourselves in the foot. I mean, we all know we need a receiver, but now we will need another one, in addition to all of our other glaring problems. Cammy was probably the best receiver on the team outside of Harvin. It’s not like he was going to command a huge salary or anything. But then again, maybe with free agency, we will be able to upgrade. I am nervous….I hope our front office knows what the hell they are doing….the past suggests they don’t.

They used him as a punt returner and gave him a chance as a wr
And he didn’t make an impact. This is the NFL, a cut throat, only the strong survive league. It’s not Pop Warner where everyone gets the same amount of minutes played.

See I have to respectfully disagree with you here Ted
I don’t think we picked up Camy to replace Rice I think we got him because Harvin missed preseason games with migraine issues and Childress wasn’t sure how consistently he was going to be able to play. When Harvin came back strong Camy’s role sort of disapeared. I don’t think the outside WR experiment for Harvin was much of a success so the plays designed to go inside once again belonged to Harvin.
Can’t say it’s the reason it happened but it was my take on it.
The Vikes aren't in a remodeling or reconstruction they are in a burn the place down and start praying they don't mimic the Lions rebuilding process.
Yep
I agree. I think Cammy was brought in for 2 reasons: depth, and a backup to Harvin. He was never going to be a guy that lines up outside. Cammy was a slot receiver, and when you’ve got Harvin, there’s no reason to play Cammy. Cammy lacks the speed and size to compete on the outside, but has the route-running and sure-hands required of an inside slot guy.
Camarillo was insurance more than anything, and now that he’s older, and Harvin seems to have conquered his migraines, we don’t really need him. Don’t get me wrong though, I liked him too, but it’s time to move on.
Ponder. Peterson. Percy. Purple Perfection.
And
At the time, Rice was injured and Harvin was dealing with migraines. There was a game or two in there, where we didn’t have either guy. We had Berrian…and…eventually Moss, and then nobody else really.
Without Rice we tried several experiments in 2010: Bring in Moss (failed). Move Harvin to the outside (failed). Again, I don’t think trading for Camarillo was to address the loss of Sidney Rice to injury as much as it was for insurance for Harvin and depth, because had nobody.
Ponder. Peterson. Percy. Purple Perfection.
my fav cammy moment
Was when he broke that big punt return in 2010 can’t remember who against but I liked it!

Wouldn't be surprised if
we my re-sign him IF this years “WR-plan” doesn’t plan out as expected.
Decent #3-4/backup WR with pretty good hands, speed, rout-running.
My favorite moments, aside from the clip;
He seemed to be there when asked for, but (strangely enough) seldom used.
6' 3", 209 lbs, long blond hair, moustache and beard.
As a Viking ought to be ;-)
I agree with most of the people here
From the first moment I saw him, I thought he was going to be very good as a Vike. My dad and I watched a pre-season game his first year, and we both were very impressed how he seemed to catch everything thrown his way, like a poor man’s Cris Carter. Then, as the season went on, I was bummed to see him only periodically show up on the field. I never understood why they didn’t utilize him more. He’s like the opposite of Troy Williamson or Bernard Berrian, not too fast, but actually catches the ball, good route runner, hard worker, and good teammate.
Imagine what the Belichick and Brady could do with Cammy.

You don't pull the mask of the Spiderman
And you don't trash talk about him
He's the same type of player as Wes Welker, with sure hands
I don’t remember what game it was, but Aro dropped a buncha passes in one game this year. That’s pretty frustrating.
In 2009 with Miami Camarillo had 50 passes thrown to him and didn’t drop one of them.

I just wish I understood Musgrave. Recognizing the problem is the first step toward recovery, so they say ;)

I really enjoy watching his brother at games. He gets so into the game from his seat and is always animated. Very fun to watch!

Vikings stadium bill coming as soon as Thursday

Getty ImagesThe Vikings finally seem to be closing in on their long-awaited new stadium. And it won’t be built in Southern California.
A.J. Monsour of KFAN reports that the Minnesota Legislature could pass a stadium bill as soon as Thursday. A press conference has been scheduled for 9:00 a.m. CT
It kinda amazes me how people view Cammy
He came from Miami on a fair trade for Sapp. Sapp was by no means an all star defensive back and Cammy wasn’t either. Not saying he didn’t have good hands and couldn’t run his routes, but obviously separation was an issue for him or the coaches would have used him more. I hope they know more than we do about the players they see every day, and with that in mind the most probable reason they didn’t play Cammy was because he wasn’t good enough to play.
The Vikes aren't in a remodeling or reconstruction they are in a burn the place down and start praying they don't mimic the Lions rebuilding process.
Rrrrright, and the reason that Musgrave would run a "WebbCat" play in the middle of a good drive?
Was obviously to just kill momentum so we would end up with a high draft pick by the end of the year.

Same thinking here
It’s not so much a reaction to dumping Cammy as it is to trying to figure out what in the heck Musgrave is doing.
He gets rid of a guy who catches everything thrown his way, has a great work ethic, is cheep, is not past his prime, runs routes pretty good, fits perfectly into a West Coast offense, and keeps a guy who drops a lot and is not outstanding at anything in particular in Aro. Go figure.

I can't figure out Musgrave, I don't think he is a big "vision" guy
when it comes to the offense. I don’t think Frazier or Spielman have a real vision for the team either. usgrave seemed like he had some great plays in the playbook, but the way he strung them together didn’t seem coherent. It seemed like once he got momentum, then he would take try to fool people with some crazy gadget play. Like the Webb Cat thing, who doesn’t see that coming when you have to trot Webb out onto the field just to run it, and then kill the drive in the process.
I do think that maybe the team is "visioning’ a younger roster, so maybe that has something to do with their decision. But I liked Cammy and wouldn’t mind having him back for another year.
