Potentially thrilling news after the jump

Star-divide

So in my early morning internet rummaging i ran into a story on ESPN that is very newsworthy around these here parts and I wanted to share with the good people of the Daily Norseman.

I for one was ecstatic when i read a little of what was in there.

Maybe a sign to come for OUR GREAT FRANCHISE? Let's hope so! I'm not good a writing up big stories so lets hope this is informative enough to catch ya'lls eye

I saw that last night too

LA has already been ruled out as a destination for the Vikes in 2012, but based on these comments from Goodell, I think it’s safe to assume the Vikes will stay in MN. Unfortunately that pulls a lot of leverage away from the Vikings as they try to negotiate a deal. Instead of using the competition of LA to give them an edge, they are now going to have to use the competing sites within MN to get the best deal for the team.

EXACTLY....

losing the threat of relocation is going to douse what ever fire was lit under the a$$ of the legislature to get the stadium issue resolved

AKA

DOH! For the Vikings leverage.

Just build a damn stadium that is competitive with he league and I’ll be happy. Site neutral here.

You know

whoever edited the commercial used JA’s WORST moments of singing. His pitch accuracy and musicality really wasn’t that bad when you get to hear the whole thing. I was impressed! :D

I don't know how they would pull this off...

The numbers are so pretty right now, why would you mess with them?

2 Conferences of 17 = 3 divisions of 4 + one division of 5? Don’t do a major-league baseball (pre-2012) and have unequal divisions!

Another thing to ponder: are there enough quality players to have two more teams? Hell, half the teams out there don’t have a starting QB. Adding two teams would result in the skill gap between the haves and have-nots getting even bigger OR an overall reduction in quality as teams are forced to spread the talent over two additional teams.

I’m thinking this is Goodell’s attempt at getting a London franchise: Expand to 34 by adding L.A. and London. Seems like a terrible idea to me, but I’m not an owner with a shot at voting on this.

I don't even understand the need for another team.

Does California really need 4 different teams? Florida has 3 teams, and they’re struggling to fill seats in Tampa Bay/Jacksonville. Why would you want to have that issue in another state as well?

Geeze, just kick the Chargers or Raiders over to L.A. and be done with it.

Couldn't agree with you more.

Especially since the Chargers have some of the same attendance woes already seen in Florida. I can’t imagine there’s a scenario where California can fill 4 stadiums constantly.

by Purpledork on Feb 3, 2012 2:28 PM CST up reply actions

Cuz CA

Has twice the population and 5 times the economic power that Florida has perhaps??? Because there is an area of California the consists of over 12 million people and has no football team where two could easily coexist

by dirtyplay on Feb 4, 2012 1:02 AM CST up reply actions

Tell that to the Rams and Raiders.

LA has not shown that they can host an NFL team.

by Purpledork on Feb 4, 2012 10:03 AM CST up reply actions

Hmm...

One question.

34 teams equals 17 teams per conference, meaning we have two divisions with 5 teams anyhow.

by Bjorno on Feb 3, 2012 4:59 PM CST reply actions

Yeah, if they want it to be as good as it is now..

they’d have to add at least 4, so we’d get 36 total, split up into two conferences of 18. I wouldn’t mind seeing 3 divisions of 6. That would make winning your division so much more of a milestone. You wouldn’t see anybody 8-8 or 7-9 and getting homefield advantage.

Rotating divisions?

The only way I can see to ensure fairness is to rotate teams around divisions every year. Not a good plan. The NFL in its current incarnation is perfect. It seems there is enough trouble already with faltering support in some cities, and expansion just doesn’t seem like a sound financial decision. Expansion outside of US borders is folly, and I hope it isn’t a serious consideration.

So Hawaii and Alaska isn’t out of the picture? Hmm

That is still inside our borders...

But I think that giving Canada an NFL team or two is not a bad idea.

by Bjorno on Feb 7, 2012 10:14 AM CST up reply actions

might not be too bad if Buffalo jumps across the border

Canada gets a team. People in Buffalo area can still go and attendence is probably up if they do it. Win-win

just keep it at 32 teams...

man, the system couldn’t be any more perfect the way it is. i understand it’s a business and they want to grow, but first it was an 18 game season (stupid), now 34 teams (even more stupid), ugh.

nothing wrong with uprooting a struggling team and moving them elsewhere. if anything, Jacksonville should move (Florida isn’t a big enough market to sustain 3 NFL teams). stop the expansion crap.
