Jared Allen Passed Over For Defensive Player Of The Year; Baltimore's Suggs Wins Award
You know, I was going to throw an open thread up here for the "NFL Honors" show that will come on NBC at 8 PM Central time tonight, but apparently the NFL has taken the brilliant step of releasing all of the winners before the show is actually aired, meaning that now I don't have to waste time and bandwidth with it.
So, if the title of the article didn't already give away the results of the one award that Viking fans would be interested in tonight. . .well, prepare to break out your "shocked" face:
Ravens linebacker Terrell Suggs wins NFL Defensive Player of the Year. #Vikings Jared Allen comes up short. #nflhonors
— Mark Craig (@markcraignfl) February 5, 2012
According to ESPN's Kevin Seifert, Suggs received 21 votes for the award, while Allen received 14 (out of 50).
I mentioned in my post yesterday about the subject, I thought the race for the Defensive Player of the Year would come down to Allen and Suggs, and it did. Do I think the right guy won? Well, I'm biased, so my answer would obviously be "no," but Suggs was one of the few guys an argument could have actually been made for.
Well, at least my evening is free now, I suppose.

Allen snubbed, Carter snubbed...
At least Doleman got the nod… 1/3 is still less than the Vikes deserved this year though. Bull.

yet he was UNANIMOUSLY an all pro??? this doesnt even make sense, god this is terrible…

Bullshit
He had the second highest sack total in the history of the NFL and didn’t win? Wow. Just Wow.
nfl awards are such a joke
Just pike the probowl has turned into a big ol turdfest

Individual award - not team award
What a complete fraud – but all too predictable. I think most people have a problem giving this award to a guy on a terrible defense with a terrible record. But think about it this way. Suggs was surrounded by more talent than Jared and produced only 60% of the sacks that Allen did. I think you could argue that it would be easier to game plan specifically against Jared since a lot of the talent around him was 2nd rate, and yet he basically tied the all time single season record for sacks. With all of the talent on the Ravens D it would be harder for a team to just game plan for stopping him. I think Suggs is a great player, I just think #69 was a lot more deserving. I’m not sure how you justify voting for Suggs without factoring in the rest of his teammates. One more reason to get this season behind us – asap!!!

Closed circuit to the NFL.
If you want people to watch your over hyped awards show on a Saturday night, make sure the people who deserve to win the award don’t get snubbed,
Another good idea is to not release the names of the winners until the broadcast has actually started…
The night is always darkest before the dawn.
im surprised
Rodgers got MVP I mean he set records and all but to be the dirt QB in history to go 15-1 and not to win a playoff game… Sad

Another thing that doesn't make sense...
I guess Drew Brees crushed (and I do mean C-R-U-S-H-E-D) A-Rodge for offensive player of the year.
This never made any sense to me. If he was the best offensive player of the year, how is he not the MVP? I don’t think you can say Rodgers did more with less, because I think the wide receivers for the Packers are better than the Saints. Is it because they went 15-1? I just don’t get it.
The night is always darkest before the dawn.
Drew Brees had no chance.
His completion ratio and yards have no chance against anyone on the team which managed to get the Super Bowl trophy named after Lombardi, too.

Why?
Brees did nice, yeah, but Rodgers was absolutely amazing this season. I don’t think it could have been anybody but him.

Why back?
The West Coast system in Green Bay is entirely different than the NO system. Delivering the ball accurately on 7-10 yarders in a strict scheme with little room for variation in route running is not nearly as impressive to me as delivering the ball accurately using the WC, a downfield scheme, and a variable scheme using a lot of reads and audibles.
by liveforadrenaline on Feb 5, 2012 2:15 PM CST up reply actions
Rodgers was the one throwing the ball deep more often
Rodgers’ averaged 9.2 yards per attempt, while Brees averaged 8.3.
The reason why Brees has the total yards and touchdowns over Rodgers is because he threw the ball 155 more times. Rodgers averaged 31 throws per game, so that’s as if Brees played 5 more games than Rodgers to put up those numbers. If Rodgers threw 155 more times with his average yards/attempt and touchdowns/attempt, he would have had over 6,000 yards and 59 touchdowns.
Angelo: Right….so anyways Jay, I’m sure you understand that we needed to make this move and I wanna wish you the best of luck.
Cutler: (Swoops bangs out of eyes by throwing his head back) Whatever, I don’t need this team or you.

Grossman: What the fuck is Wilford Brimley’s problem?
Peyton Manning deserved the MVP
MVP is the Most Valuable Person to his team….Flynn throwing for over 500 yards makes me question how bad the pack woulda been if Rodgers got hurt, but for the colts to go from a playoff team to the worst team in football with the loss of 1 player tells me that he is the league MVP…
More impressive year
When you look at the individual stats, Allen only trails by a couple in overall tackles, one FF, and one INT but the fact he had such AWESOME numbers with the Vikings non-existent secondary speaks volumes to his individual defensive performance becomes so much greater than Suggs.
Like the NFL article said, Suggs had a simply phenomenal supporting cast and overall defense. Allen had……. well next to nothing. Where would Allen’s numbers had been if Ngata was playing NT for us or the Raven’s secondary been covering WRs? Dare we say he would have destroyed the record with the effort he put in this year? I think it would have been possible.
The fact that you have to be on a winning team to win one of the there awards is a sham.
In this Viking fan’s heart, Jared Allen will always be the DPOY for 2011.
Allen got jobbed, no doubt.
He deserved it, no question. And I still have no clue on how Carter isn’t in the HOF. I would have bet money a couple years ago that he would go in before Doleman based on how they were both getting snubbed.
Angelo: Right….so anyways Jay, I’m sure you understand that we needed to make this move and I wanna wish you the best of luck.

Sorry meant for this to be a reply to AF
Ditto on your comment “In this Viking fan’s heart, Jared Allen will always be the DPOY for 2011.”
Typical
The Vikings get the sh*t end of the stick again. Terrell Suggs? Got to be kidding. But, a team with a winning record will get the nod over a better player with a lousy team.
I’ll take J.A. over anyone in the league. These ‘sportswriters’ are nothing but assholes.
"Never approach a bull from the front, a horse from the rear, or a fool from any direction." - Old Cowboy proverb.
This is the absolute biggest amount of

I’ve ever seen. Allen single handedly carried the entire defense.
Gentlemen! You can't fight in here, this is a war room!
The sportswriters who write for the neanderthal Associated Press
Are mostly on the East Coast. And the only time they ever set foot in the Midwest is when they visit Green Bay.
That is all…

It's evidently all about team wins,
which is strange since it’s an individual honor. There’s no other excuse for giving it to Suggs other than his team won more games and Allen’s team was lousy.
Maybe pro football will learn a little something from college football. Remember when the Heisman went to the best player from the top ranked team? With RGIII they finally figured it out.
Funny you should mention team wins
Funny you should mention team wins. I agree that it is an individual honor and this whole “system” if thats what you want to call it. Because the “system” doesn’t play by its own rules.
Let’s take a trip down memory lane. I won’t go through every year but just major ones. Lets start in 1969. Joe Kapp has a 12-1 regular season record. Played 1 less game than Roman Gabriel who was 11-3 as a starter. Minnesota Vikings break records across the board with the best record in the league. Yes Roman Gabriel had a great year. But lets go by these “experts” own rules. Did I also mention the Kapp Vikes beat the Roman and the Rams in LA that year too in the regular season. We all know that Kapp and the Vikes beat the Rams in the playoffs too. Funny, because 41 years later, Drew Brees had a Roman Gabriel season compared to Rodgers…in a way. Did I mention the Vikes also had the best record in the NFL?
1973, OJ Simpson wins with a 9-5 Bills team. Incredible year, hell yes! Team wins…guess who’s number one…yep the Vikes and Dolphins. Big snub from that year, Bobby Bryant has 7 interceptions and 1 TD and doesn’t make the Pro Bowl.
Lets go ahead to 1998. Comparing stats only Davis does earn MVP with 2000+ yards rushing. Guess who had the most wins. Vikes and Randall Cunningham. Again, TD had a Drew Brees year racking up stats but team wins the “rules” suggest Cunningham should win.
Lets go ahead to 2001. The Giants are 7-9. Strahan gets 22.5* sacks. We all know what the * is for. Guess who gets the DPOTY?
Funny that in 2009 Manning threw 9 more INT than Favre and they had the same amount of TD’s thrown, and Manning threw 40 more passes and their completion % is the same.
Moving on, here’s what the votes were.
Terrell Suggs, LB Ravens 21
Jared Allen, DE Vikings 14
Justin Smith, DE-DT 49ers 6
Jason Pierre-Paul, DE Giants 5
Patrick Willis, LB 49ers 2
NaVorro Bowman, LB 49ers 1
Charles Woodson, CB Packers 1
I know that it doesn’t matter the numbers below the winner, but how did Justin Smith beat out JPP in votes? Honestly, can you imagine if Hall of Fame voting was like this, instead of narrowing down nominees its just a popular vote without narrowing down…oh wait…we can probably conclude thats essentially what it is….. Seriously? Who are these people that vote for these “honors”? For the last few weeks we heard it was down to 3 with Allen being the frontrunner. Are the voters not allowed to watch any media coverage of these players?
Charles Woodson is certainly a Hall of Fame candidate but his Hall of Fame caliber play is long gone. Its funny because if you actually watched Charles Woodson this season, he was worse than an old Paul Krause at tackling in Paul Krause’s later years. Jumping routes via grabbing the shoulder pads of the receiver/tight end and propelling himself in front to get position…thats it. He missed tackles and a lot of big plays were made because he jumped too early…too far…or he simply missed. Did Paul Krause ever get consideration? (I love Paul Krause but I’m sure he’d be the first to tell you that he was a centerfielder and not a run stopper). So anyone watching Woodson with a half a brain of individual ability at a position wouldn’t vote for him and we hadn’t heard even a sniff of DPOTY from the media to sway opinion.
49ers defensive players achievements combined do not equal even what Suggs did. At the same time, Suggs amount of tackles a linebacker position should take away right? If a DE cough*Allen*cough has nearly as many as Suggs, and that DE has far more sacks and is double teamed and hit by tight ends on nearly every play…where does that leave us…
This is certainly a farce and there was no reason for a 7 way race for DPOTY. 3 candidates at most. Would Allen still have won? So in retrospect, Favre should’ve signed with the Bears halfway through the season so he would’ve laid down for him to break the record…
No let me tell you how I really feel.
Well, let's not act shocked
We all pretty much knew this was going to hapen. Still disappointing though.
I still can’t fathom how a guy who comes half a sack short of tying the season record gets passed by, though.
Here’s hoping Allen uses it as extra motivation and goes out to break the record next year. Though somehow I have a feeling they’d find a way to shaft him then too.
I had a sneaking suspicion that he wouldn't get it.
But he damn well should have. I don’t think anyone deserved it more than he did. I am biased, but it’s still a metric ass-ton of horse manure that he didn’t win.
And of course Carter got screwed again.
Complete bull!
Build up your weaknesses until they become your strong points." --Knute Rockne
Of course.
Ever since the Super Bowl trophy was named after Lombardi, the football gods have been smiting us.
3-13
That says it all.
It is very depressing just to think how much of a difference Favre made in 2009. I mean how can a team almost go to the Super Bowl and then fall completely off the map in the next two years to being one of the worst teams in the league?
This current team was not built for the long haul. That is why there are 19 free agents with most of them being below average at best.
I am having a very hard time trying to put together a realistic, sensible, and doable off season plan that the team can attempt in an effort to get back to being competitive. They have so many players to replace. The ones that are leaving should be leaving. I would not want them back as they helped the team the last two years achieve the success they enjoyed.
I only can come up with fantasy ideas. Dream scenarios if you will.
Allen finally played the run decently this year which combined with his sacks put him in consideration for the award. I think he deserved it. But they just do not give awards to players on lousy teams very often.
In the end, the 3-13 record speaks for itself. No one on this team deserves any award IMO.
On the bright side, those sacks will certainly help him out when it comes time to HOF voting. Hopefully he can average 15 sacks a year the next 3 years. That would put him 4th on the all time list. I am hoping he can continue to get sacks at his career average. Then there should be no way he does not get into the HOF.
That last sentence is what we all though about Chris Carter
Look how that’s turned out
by Coolio12 on Feb 5, 2012 9:54 AM CST via mobile up reply actions
He will get in but it takes time
Personally I do not care about the HOF. Look who votes on it?
Cris Carter’s career speaks for itself. You can never take away those 130 TDs and 1,101 catches. Never.
The HOF is a waste of time. We all know who belongs.
You think this is bad. Wait until Randy Moss is eligible.
I do give Suggs some credit
He did call Skip Bayless a douchebag on live TV. That may have swayed the AP to vote for him. Other than that I think Allen was more deserving.
