Congratulations To The New York Giants
The New York Giants and the New England Patriots gave us another classic Super Bowl, one that came down to the final play. It featured big plays, bad plays. . .and what could have been the first ever player in Super Bowl history to become a "goat" for scoring a touchdown.
But, in the end, the Giants walked out of Lucas Oil Stadium with their fourth Super Bowl championship, holding on for a 21-17 victory.
The Giants didn't have an easy road to Indianapolis, as they defeated the top two seeds in the NFC on the road in the post-season. They finished the season with six straight victories, and a loss in any one of those six games would have ended their season.
This was the first season in quite a while that we didn't play the Giants in the regular season, but their fans have never been anything but awesome to us when we've played against them, and even though I didn't pick them in this game, it's great to see them win.
Congratulations to the New York Giants on winning Super Bowl XLVI. Can't put it any more simply than that. Swing on by Big Blue View if you get a chance and give them their props.
And, with that. . .no meaningful NFL football for seven months. But we'll have plenty of stuff for you in the meantime, I can assure you.

I was rooting for the Pats
Hoping Brady would get a fourth ring, but I have to hand it to the Giants. They have the Pats’ number obviously.
Dropped passes were
The killer for Brady. He delivered. The WR’s failed him.
Vikings in 2012 will be a Wonder-ful year. Seriously!!

that drop by Welker...
was equal parts Brady and Welker’s fault, IMO. Brady threw it over the wrong shoulder, making it a much harder catch than it should have been. Welker could’ve, maybe should’ve, still caught it. But it was a difficult catch for a guy of Welker size and athletic ability.
by Are we cursed? on Feb 5, 2012 11:00 PM CST up reply actions
He had it in both his hands
That should have been a catch. Yes, it was difficult to make, but Welker’s done it time and again. That play was on him, not Tom.
Tom’s dumb for throwing that deep pass that Gronk way down the field that came up short/intercepted.
But really, his recievers started dropping the ball more frequently near the end of the game. That had to have been frustrating for him.

I would stay away from the Pats Pulpit open thread…..they are getting TROLLED BAD. Someone’s posting some really messed up “adult themed” gifs on there and no one’s getting banned for it. Just for those of you who may have kids around or don’t want to see trash like that.

Anyway I’m stoked the pats lost, maybe it’s just me but I’ve never met a decent fan of that team. And I love how one of the commenters started talking crap about Vikings fans and one of the people in charge of this blog because of something completely unrelated.
Congrats to the giants

LOL I
fell asleep in the 3rd woke up just in time to see the “goat Play” and say what the? That the Pats were in dire. For all the hooplah I was happy to not see all the groovie coolie latest and greatest commercials and the Madonna half time..its prolly just me but Its the biggest day in football I would lke to see a half time show of something related to the history of football or a half hour of good humanity stories like the one pre game on the Saints players fight with ALS I actualy cried. Some how the NFL thinks or its advertisers think that its fans are mindless spomges that need to filled with over the top musical has beens thats musical content has nothing to do with football. I thought the Pats were going to show up and air it out crazy and it would be a chase. I think the best games I saw this year were the play off games of the 49’s and the beating the pack took. but grattz to the Giants.

Their playoffs started week 16 actually when they beat the Jets
Then they had Dallas in week 17 and the playoffs since. They did it again. Got hot at the right time, but you could see that there was talent all over their team and it was really a matter of them figuring out how to play as a team. Getting healthy late in the season never hurts either.
White Horn Gold Pants
Quite frankly I like Eli Manning.
There’s something about elite QB’s that makes you hate them. Brees, Rodgers, Brady…
Somehow the Manning brothers escape that for me. Years like this where the Vikes miss the playoffs I don’t have any problem rooting for a Manning.
It's because Eli isn't elite.
The Vikes aren't in a remodeling or reconstruction they are in a burn the place down and start praying they don't mimic the Lions rebuilding process.
He is..
Forever the underdog.. Even though he shouldn’t have been in this game.
He’s certainly not elite, (I’m still not going to consider him top-5 in the league) but he’s pretty damn close. If anything, he’s one of the more clutch QBs in the league.
by REVENGE4KLUWE on Feb 6, 2012 9:38 AM CST up reply actions
You must have missed the San Fran game.
Did he play well in the super bowl against a busted up Pats secondary? Yep. Does that make him great? Nope. He was 9-7 on the season had three very good receivers and some good protection. If he could play like he did on Sunday every time (or at least 80% of the time) he would impress me. As is, I put him under Rivers, Ryan.
The Vikes aren't in a remodeling or reconstruction they are in a burn the place down and start praying they don't mimic the Lions rebuilding process.
Mario Manningham would look good in Purple ...
I believe he is now an UFA. What a catch!
by Torstein on Feb 6, 2012 4:03 AM CST via mobile reply actions
He is OK
He ran a 4.59 at the combine and then a 4.42 at his pro day. I do not know which one to believe. is stats are just OK too. 57,60, & 39 catches the last 3 years with 5,9, & 4 TDs. Nothing earth shattering there.
Plus he is playing with Eli Manning who has not been great but is decent over the last four years. Numbers wise that is.
I suppose if the Vikings had no other choice then he could be another possession guy. I would rather get a speed guy like Pierre Garcon or Laurent Robinson.
I want a WR who has put up numbers with lousy QBs and no help on the other side. Dwayne Bowe is the one guy who has had bad QB play and no help on the other side and he still put up good numbers. Now some will talk about his attitude and all this and that but his numbers speak for themselves.
Manningham is probably around the 5-8 range of WRs I would add as a FA.
What about Stevie Johnson? He's another guy that's put up good numbers with only average QBs and he's got way more fight in him than Bowe.
by CanadianViking on Feb 6, 2012 8:04 AM CST up reply actions
Drops, drops, and more drops.
I’ve already stated it about Bowe, but Stevie Johnson is even worse. Sometimes he looks more like Stevie Wonder.
But that means we could probably get him on the cheap.
by REVENGE4KLUWE on Feb 6, 2012 9:39 AM CST up reply actions
Nothing like getting a bad player cheap
to get you a bad player… :D
The Vikes aren't in a remodeling or reconstruction they are in a burn the place down and start praying they don't mimic the Lions rebuilding process.
You're right about Bowe and drops but wrong about Johnson. Stevie has two drops for TDs that made the highlight films the last two years but those aren't the norm for him.
It’s hard to find this stat but here’s a link to the leaders in the AFC for dropped passes this year. Bowe was first with 12 and Stevie Johnson doesn’t even make the list meaning he had less than 5 dropped passes which is better than almost every top receiver in the NFL. If you check the NFC list you’ll be surprised to see Roddy White lead the league in drops. Johnson gets a bad rap for two drops and the flag he got for his T-shirt celebration this year. Basically since he plays for Buffalo not many people have seen much of him outside of his Sportcentre appearances but trust me he’s really good. Look for highlights of him getting the best of Revis this year if you don’t believe me.

I like Dwayne Bowe a lot.
And he’s probably my 1st choice. I just think it’s interesting that the Giants went to Manningham 4-5 times in a row with the game on the line.

Manningham was getting single coverage.
The Pats doubled Cruz all game and because of Nicks presence Manningham also faced the Pats worst corner most of the game.

I could never root for the Giants
I do not like the Patriots that much either.
But after the Giants spanked the Vikings 41-0 in that 2000 NFCCG, I cant stand them.
They have been more lucky than good this post season that is for sure. They dropped two balls yesterday that miraculously bounced there way. You had Brady miss a wide open Welker by just a enough to cause Welker to not come up with the catch.
In the SF game the punt returner single handedly tilted that game just by fumbling the ball. Yeah the Giants did make the tackles that knocked the ball out but they were monster hits or anything like that. The dude just dropped the ball.
That is called luck.
But they do deserve credit for making the plays when they needed to be made.
I just cannot root for them ever.

Giants
Although that staff and players are different than that 2000 team, I have to side with you slightly. I never understood how that game wasn’t looked into in terms of spygate. Watching that game, you can’t tell me that all the defensive lineman were beating the offensive line off the ball.
Here was our starting line.
Todd Steussie LT
Corbin Lacina LG
Matt Birk C
David Dixon RG
Korey Stringer RT
I mean seriously? A team doesn’t dismantle a high powered offense and then go on to the Super Bowl and have trouble with an average offense at best. I won’t get into the average at BEST to the Ravens and I’m glad they manhandled the Giants, but you have Randy Moss and Cris Carter and Robert Smith in the backfield. It doesn’t make sense.
Did Belicheck cheat? Yes. Have other teams cheated? Yes, and this needs to be addressed.
I think the big error that nobody has said yet was chucking a deep pass to Gronk, the guy has limited mobility and although he was trying to do his best Kyle Rudolph impression, he should NEVER lose a jump ball and should NEVER lose position on the ball. Was it his lack of mobility or did he actually think he make a circus catch in the Super Bowl? Either way, the receivers in this game were terrible in terms of catching the ball, field awareness, and just overall play. Why is it the Larry Fitzgerald is the only receiver these days that actually comes back to get the ball rather than keep running and if it doesn’t make it or if the defender has position…meh…no big deal……Manningham made a great catch, he certainly redeemed himself from that complete miss before where he was 20 yards out of bounds(exaggeration) [serious lack of field awareness]. The makeup catch was great. This is nowhere near the importance of the Tyree catch. It was 1st and 10 with 3:47 left to go in the game. When the ball was snapped. If he doesn’t catch it there’s no reason not to believe the Giants go down the field and score with the way they were running the ball as well as throwing.
I'm all on board with this thought process
the 41 – 0 drubbing in the NFCCG was so bad a memory that I will never root for the Giants, ever. The fact that they won the super bowl makes me happy I don’t have cable.
The Vikes aren't in a remodeling or reconstruction they are in a burn the place down and start praying they don't mimic the Lions rebuilding process.
You're forgetting that the time the Patriots DID
recover a fumble, they inexplicably had 12 men on the field. Just terrible breaks for the Pats in term of turnovers. That was the key in this game.

Worst Super Bowl Champs Ever?
Living in Brooklyn, the New Jersey teams are right behind the Packers in teams I loathe. 9-7 has to be the record for worst team to win it all.
http://drawingwalks.wordpress.com/
At least the Packers weren't the champions
I’m looking forward to an offseason of not having completely insufferable Packer fan friends.
Worst Ever? No.
I get where you’re coming from on the record but look back and this isn’t the worst super bowl team as far as ability in the playoffs. You could argue that the 2001 Pats from a season standpoint or even as a team performing in the playoffs were worse than this Giants team going into the Super Bowl…
Lets scrap the regular season record for arguments sake and focus on the playoffs. The Giants were lucky enough to play in the Super Bowl but played in Green Bay who just had a bye and then played San Francisco who also had a bye 2 weeks prior and then play the Pats who were the number 1 seed and essentially had 4 total weeks off from week 1 of the regular season to yesterday.
Wild Card: Falcons offense had too many weapons for the Giants to stop and that game was not pretty. In fact, the Giants beat up on them worse than Green Bay did last year in the playoffs even though the Falcons team has added better players
Divisional: Green Bay was supposed to win it all. This was a team that could not be stopped. Excuse the “cheesy” pun but they were stopped and got stomped by the Giants. Not to mention the score of the game was closer had it not been for some severely bad calls.
Championship: 49ers were no pushoever, severe mistakes cost them the game but the 49ers could’ve cover the receivers as well as the defense was supposed to do as they had done all year.
Super Bowl: Had these “professional” receivers for the Pats not dropped so many passes we are probably talking about a different championship team.
Overall: With the exception of Gronk, The Giants played all of their opponents at virtually 100% strength and were fortunate to have all of their defensive players healthy which they didn’t have in the regular season.
Lets go back to last year. Green Bay is one of the LUCKIEST Super Bowl winners ever. Luckier than this years Giants. They barely made it into the playoffs thanks to the Giants! Back up to the Packers/Vikes game where Childress was correct in saying that was the worst officiating ever and had to apologize to the Vikes in blowing numerous calls the following day.
Moving on
Wild Card: The Eagles are hobbling along into the playoffs and weren’t the same since playing Minnesota a few weeks earlier. Vick is by no means able to scramble and therefore a scrambling quarterback has to become a pocket passer because of his injured leg.
Divisional: Matt Ryan is overrated. Kinda like a young Eli Manning, when he’s on…he’s pretty good…he’s awful when the tough get going. (I hope the NFL community gets off the Matt Ryan bandwagon soon) This is a meltdown unlike any other the NFL has seen in a number one seed in a divisional round up to that point. (Yes that would actually go to Green Bay/January 2012) Note: This is the only game in the playoffs where the Packers play a full game against 1 healthy quarterback.
Championship: The Bears. This was a decent game and even after Jay Cutler was out…the Packers had trouble! Yes, go back and watch this game, this was not a pretty game for the Pack. Rodgers threw no touchdowns and (gasp!) two INTs!
Super Bowl: Packers rushed the ball for a whopping 50 yards. Big Ben had could barely move around due to his ankle and therefore made him a pocket passer in a guy who can scramble and extend plays. That part of his game was taken away due to injury and what makes their offense really good at times. To top it off, James Harrison is playing with a broken leg and Troy is also playing with major injuries.
Overall: The Packers played 16 quarters of football in the postseason. 6 of which were against healthy starting quarterbacks. With the exception of the Falcons, the Packers go to play teams that were hobbling along into playoffs and stumbling along during the playoffs. Ironically this is never discussed while in 2009 the Vikings were playing teams at their “peak” in the playoffs. (I use "" because I didn’t believe the Cowboys stood a chance…regardless of their hype prior to that) Could you imagine if Drew Brees was knocked in the NFC championship in 2009 like the Jay Cutler versus the Packers scenario?
Now let me tell you how I really feel.
This is going to be a good offseason because yes Packer fans still believe that the Packers will win next year, but at least we’ll be able to laugh a little like we’ve had every other year prior to last offseason.

a different perspective???
For all the prowess of the Patriots, their coach and front-office over the years I can’t believe this team got to the SB w/ no serious wideout to stretch the field or RB. The TE’s are awsome and Welker (minus the drop) is great in the slot but……The Giants, although “only” 9-7, got healthy and jelled when it counted. Clearly by years end they were the best team playing as wins IN SF, GB and then the SB would confirm. Eli has a steady RB combo and 3..yes 3, excellent wideouts to throw to and their DL wreaks havok. You think Brady wishes he had just one of Cruz, Mannigham or Nicks?? Congrats to the Giants for a well deserved victory.

This is probably the best summary of what happened yesterday that I’ve heard. Giants playing their best ball. They have the talent to be great. Patriots played kind of how they did all season, inconsistent. Wonder how much the Gronk injury affect his play? They shut him down. Eli’s a damn good QB and once again, there was a crazy-ass catch to help set them up for the easy go-ahead TD. Even though the Giants only had 14 pts before that final drive. I think everyone just knew that Eli would get that done. Did anyone have that faith in Brady? I didn’t. Things have changed for him. Maybe its the lack of weapons, maybe not. They need a big-play receiver. One a little more protypical. That way they can keep their TEs as TEs and have them work the middle of the field while spreading it on the outside.
White Horn Gold Pants
thank you!! I agree with your points as well.....
…..I think the injury to Gronk virtually eliminated one of the few weapons Brady has-he couldn’t run or make the cuts needed to get open.On to your bigger point I also agree that NE played very inconsistent this year and I do think that’s in part to the limited options available on offense as well as, perhaps, Brady/Welker, etc. getting long in the tooth. I live in NJ (don’t hold that against me!) so I’m at the center of the media hype and only a few years ago most people wanted to run Eli out of NY. It’s amazing what a few years of learning, 2 championships and an array of weapons can do!! Other than our Vikings, I will be most interested to see how NE re-tools in the off-season and draft.

Glad to see those days behind us. I think it was the Titans being stopped just short of the goal line on the final play that ended the streak of boring Superbowls. Last night’s game was a lot of fun to watch.
