OT Patrick Brown Re-Signed
It may not be earth-shattering, I know, but the Vikings have made their first off-season move to keep some of the jumble of FAs on the team, re-signing backup offensive tackle Patrick Brown to a one-year contract, reportedly worth $540,000.
While I'm not expecting Brown to make a run at the starting job for LOT or ROT anytime soon, depth is always good, especially when your offensive line is... well, the Minnesota Vikings' offensive line.
Also, when figuring in cap space and whatnot, be sure now to account for the $54K there. Again, I know not exactly pushing us suddenly over the limit or anything, but still worth noting for the most accurate assessments.

Got me for a minute
And I was thinking, “isn’t he white?”
71 is definitely not Patrick Brown
that number belongs to Loadholt

That's what I thought.

Or allow a sack and forced fumble
in 48 plays. I could do that if they wanted to give me 500 grand :)

#79 Pat Brown 25 y/o 6'5" 310# 3rd yr from Central Florida
as the backup right tackle for the purple #79 has been grinding nearly every day of his life to prepare himself for the war … on the game field … on the practice field … in the weight room … in the meeting rooms … and … at home, i am an armchair quarterback myself however even an oldtimer like me is aware i do not wanna battle “B-Rob” and #97 on a daily basis at practice … for any amount of money … i very much respect #79 for his dedication to his profession and his willingness to pay the price for the opportunity to improve his skill set and get on that game field … obtw i am sure he earns every dollar and if the front office didnt think so he would not be there … congrats Mr Brown is gr8 to hav you wearin purple for the 2012 campaign!!!!

The one game I saw him play...
…he was shaky at the start. Actually not very good, but then he evened out as the game went on and looked just fine. My guess is that with more game experience he’ll improve even more.

My guess is
He’ll continue to be a guy you only want on the field in case of emergency. But you need those guys too.
Except that he's backing up a guy who struggles as a starter.
That might give Brown a “what have we got to lose” chance to start at some point.

The foundation of every team...
…is the bench. Without that, what would keep all their butts off the ground?
The Vikings should have used all their backup linemen a lot more this year. Guys like Brown, DeGear and Love should have been trying out for starting positions, so the team would know if they could stock the line from within rather than spend draft picks on it.
There was no reason not to try Love at LT and RT, no reason not to try Brown at RG. Berger and Fusco should have been rotated in, too. Pretending there was value in the status quo was a costly waste of time for the Vikings coaching staff.
