During this time of year 90% of my online usage time is devoted to analyzing all the mock drafts posted by every football website, or reading every Vikings article I can get my hands on. Every fan seems to have their opinion on how a team should be ran, and think they could run a team better themselves than a front office of a NFL team could. Don’t get me wrong, every fan should have their own opinion and have confidence in it. Honestly though, I just can’t see how fans who think trading a rookie QB for a 7th round pick because he had a tough rookie year behind a terrible line expect to gain any respect or credibility from anyone? One of the things I’ve seen most on many Vikings offseason articles is the lack of action Rick Spielman has taken in FA this offseason. Almost everybody expected a few big signings from the Vikes, including a #1 WR such as Vincent Jackson. Or for us to address our secondary needs by signing Brandon Carr. Many fans (including myself) were very interested in Minnesota going after former Saints* guard Carl Nicks. After the first couple days it became apparent that we weren’t going to sign any of these big name players. Our first signing was Seattle’s TE John Carlson. A lot of fans hated the signing and complained we weren’t addressing our biggest needs first. Since then the Vikings have inked a former point guard, who most recently played in minor league arena football. They signed a deal with OL Geoff Schwartz and resigned players such as Erin Henderson, Fred Evans, and Devin Aromashodu. Chris Cook has also come back from a trial and is poised to start for us next season. I’m getting tired of all the Spielman bashing that has already been going on this offseason. This is his first season he has had the say over everything. Sure the man hasn’t made any drastic changes to a horrible team that went 3-13 last year. But do you guys think starting from scratch would honestly be the best thing to do right now? Don’t forget this team lost 9 games by 7 points or less last year. One touchdown or defensive stop away from being 12-4, the same record we had in 2009 with Favre as our QB. This team definitely needs to improve dramatically in order to compete in arguably the hardest division in football the NFC North. I just don’t think replacing everyone would be the best way to do it. I am in love with a couple of our free agent signings so far. Especially the two biggest ones I mentioned earlier, Carlson and Schwartz. Two guys who have been successful in the past just cursed with injuries this last season. I think John Carlson will be great pairing with fellow Notre Dame Grad Kyle Rudolph in Bill Musgrave’s two TE offense. Shiancoe was great as a Viking and was one of my favorites, but he just didn’t work great with Musgrave, I think Carlson is a better fit for this offense. Geoff Schwartz was also a good signing to provide OL depth and good competition for most likely the Right Guard spot on our O-line. With Jimmy retiring after this past season we needed to replace him, and even though he wasn’t a FB he provided some great blocking for us and I think Spielman is trying to replace that with the 2 FB signings. It will create good competition and Lex Hillard from the Miami Dolphins can be a 3rd down back to help while AP is recovering from his injury. It looks like we are going to go into the draft with our biggest needs as OL, DB, WR, and DT (almost the whole team huh?) The Vikes look most likely to draft LT Matt Kalil. This would basically fill two holes. We could move a struggling Charlie Johnson to LG and our O-line would be significantly improved from last season. At the same time we need secondary help almost as bad. Morris Claiborne, who the Vikings FO has talked to of really liked, would be a major upgrade over what we have. Spielman has talked about how you only need a serviceable LT to be a championship contender, but many believe that to be a smokescreen to trick another team into trading up for the 3rd pick. Either way I wouldn’t be upset. Addressing WR would be the best way to go in the 2nd round IMO. Alshon Jeffery could turn into a #1 type WR to go along with Percy and Jenkins. Vikings might not be making major news and signing the Peyton Manning’s or the Mario Williams of free agency. But we are quietly making our way into a respectful football team. Anyone who bashes Spielman this fast should question themselves on how they would really handle the situation. Fill one hole with a huge contract in FA or fill several holes making under the radar signings that have a decent chance of panning out. Who knows maybe V Jackson won’t perform very well in Tampa, maybe Brandon Carr will struggle in Dallas. You never know until the game is played. So let’s have some trust in our Vikes and not question every move they make. These past 2 years Vikings fans have known what it feels like to hit rock bottom. So I guess it can only get better from here on out!
