2012 Daily Norseman Community Mock Draft -- Tampa Bay Buccaneers

The first four picks went pretty much as expected although some would disagree and feel Cleveland should have went with Ryan Tannehill or Justin Blackmon. Those would have been good choices but Trent Richardson is a very fine choice.

Now Tampa is up and there are several good players from which they can choose.

The case for Morris Claiborne. First he is pretty dang good and the BPA right now according to most boards. Second, Aqib Talib is in the last year of his deal and while talented, could be too much of a headache for the Buccaneers going forward. Also, Ronde Barber signed for only one more year which is more than likely his last. I think taking Claiborne is the smart thing to do even knowing that they signed Eric Wright to a nice deal this year. They have some other guys on the team that may or may not ascend to starter level but are good for depth.

The case for Justin Blackmon. Tampa could make this pick but it seems not likely. They have Arrelious Benn who they drafted in the second round in 2010, Mike Williams who they drafted in the 4th round of 2010, and Dezmon Briscoe who they drafted in the 6th round of 2010. They also have Preston Parker and Sammie Stroughter. Taking Blackmon would be overkill now that they signed Vincent Jackson in free agency. But I needed to include him just in case. You never know, maybe Tampa would try to trade Benn and Williams? That would not be a bad idea. Then they would have VJack and Blackmon as their wideouts to go with Kellen Winslow and they revamped offensive line. The more I type about it, the more I think it could happen.

The case for Fletcher Cox. The Buccaneers have Gerald McCoy, Brian Price, Frank Okam, John McCargo, and Roy Miller. They only had 3 sacks from Brian Price and 1 sack from Gerald McCoy out of this group. They could use a DT that can get after the passer and they may want to upgrade beyond McCoy and Price.

The case for Michael Brockers. Pretty much the same as for Cox although Brockers does not get as many sacks. He is ranked #5 on the nationalfootballpost.com board.

The case for Luke Kuechly. The Bucs can use another LB to pair with Mason Foster, Geno Hayes, Quincy Black, and Dekoda Watson. Some will say this is high for Kuechly but cbssports.com has him at #10 and nationalfootballpost.com has him at #9. So if you get a guy that you want and need at #5 then I say why not. Kuechly is the real deal.

The case for Riley Reiff. Tampa went out and signed the best guard, Carl Nicks, in free agency to pair with Davin Joseph. They are moving Jeremy Zuttah to center. They have Donald Penn at left tackle. Jeremy Trueblood is the weak link. He signed a two year deal in July of 2011 which makes this his last year. Adding Reiff would make a lot of sense. They can groom him to take over for Trueblood next year and have him in case someone gets hurt. He is ranked high enough to warrant the pick too. Although some would say that they can get a right tackle later which is true.

The case for Jonathan Martin. This is the same as for Reiff. They may just like Martin better.

The case for Dre Kirkpatrick. Same as for Claiborne. They may just like Kirkpatrick better (doubtful).

The case for Dontari Poe. Same as for Brockers and Cox. They can use an upgrade at the DT positions. This would be high for Poe but it comes down to a matter of preference.

I voted for Claiborne.
