Which College Players Are Future Vikings Week 4 Review and Week 5 Primer

The first four weeks of college football are in the books.

I thought the Florida State vs Clemson game was pretty good. Clemson tried to hang but Florida State just has too many players. I liked EJ Manuel QB, Terrence Brooks CB, and especially Christian Jones LB.
I thought the Kansas State vs Oklahoma game was a good game (at least for KSU). I was flipping between that game and another so I did not get to see all of it but Oklahoma fan has to be disappointed losing at home. I think Collin Klein was played very well.

I did not get to see my Trojans because DirecTV does not carry the PAC 12 Network yet. But they took care of Cal fairly easily. Looking at the box score you would think Marquise Lee was the best WR on the field. Could he ultimately be better than Robert Woods and Keenan Allen? Hard to say. It reminds me of when Desean Jackson played his last year at Cal. Many people were saying how Lavelle Hawkins would be a better NFL receiver. Jackson had 65 catches for 762 yards and 6 TDs in 2007. Hawkins had 72 catches for 872 yards and 6 TDs. I think that Woods is drawing a lot of the attention of the defense allowing Lee to operate vs a lot of one on one matchups. Same thing happened with Jackson at Cal that year. It will be interesting to see over the next couple of years.

There were some blowouts by teams who had the intestinal fortitude to schedule some patsies. Nebraska should be embarrassed playing Idaho State. Alabama had another patsy in Florida Atlantic. That is two patsies already not counting Michigan and Arkansas who both appear to be vastly overrated. So far Alabama has beaten the 3 schools just mentioned plus the powerhouse Western Kentucky. They may end up being the best team in the country but thus far they have not played anyone that can give them a test. And the rest of their schedule is not loaded at all. Mississippi State may hang onto their #21 ranking. How LSU is still #3 is another mystery. So far they have played North Texas (who?), Washington, Idaho, & Auburn. At least Auburn has played some decent teams so that is good for LSU. They still struggled and barely won. This week they play Towson. Awesome. I imagine they will climb up the rankings if they beat them 72-0.

I am hoping that once the playoff system they came up with begins that these jellyfish can schedule some real games.

I am listing some performances of some of the top players below. I might not have them all here so feel free to add a player who you think did really well and may have vaulted themselves up the draft boards.

Which games will you be watching and which players do you think would be great Vikings?

Here is my weekly mock. Now that the Vikings have knocked off the 49ers all bets are off. I do not have any idea where they will finish. If they can get by Detroit this weekend then they will be sitting at 3-1 and looking good. They have Tennessee at home after that which should be winnable. Washington on the road which will be tough. Arizona and Tampa at home could be wins. 6-2 is doable. After that it gets tougher but who knows by then? For now I am going to be cautious and predict a 8-8 record which means they could be picking around 14th.

Another mock. Another change. What else could I do? I have to keep trying new mocks until I get to my final mock which I will hate 5 minutes later.

I had to take Milliner because I think we have to keep adding quality corners. Cook and Robinson look to be decent starters at this point. Winfield is very OLD. He may have one more year but that is as long as I would risk playing him in the secondary. He is a warrior but I want to get young. MIlliner should be a day one starter. With the team needing to play 3 corners most of the time this would give the Vikings a nice young nucleus. They still would have Jefferson, Burton, Sherels, & Felder. The time to plan for Winfield walking away is now.

In the 2nd round I think we need a guard/tackle. Dallas Thomas has played left tackle for Tennessee the last two years and now has moved inside to guard this year. I like that kind of position flexibility. I know that some fans of Charlie Johnson may be disappointed but Johnson is only signed through the end of next year. I would hesitate to sign him after that for sure. Although he will only be 30 in May of 2014. He could get resigned as a utility backup which I think he would fit him well at that point. I still lean towards youth though. Also, Fusco, Schwartz, Asper, & Love are all unknowns. I have hopes for the first two. Then you have to wonder what they think about Loadholt. Perhaps Thomas can play right tackle. I almost put Barrett Jones as the first pick. If the Vikings win this week then I think he will be the one.

In the 3rd round I finally selected a WR. I figured Robert Woods would be gone by #14 and I did not see any WR I liked in the second round. Maybe Da'Rick Rogers? I think Dobson is pretty good though. I am not sure how many new WRs the Vikings need to add though. They will have Harvin, Simpson (hopefully), Wright (hopefully), and then the others. Childs will be on the mend and may need an extra year just to be sure. So I think a 3rd round WR is not a bad idea at all.

In the 4th round I finally added a DT. Dawkins is an impressive young man. He has already graduated which is very good. I did not take one earlier because I think Lotulelei and Hankins will go top 10. Then I did not like another DT over Milliner at #14. Around the 4th round is where I thought the value was there. Hopefully Guion is going to blossom. Maybe Ballard will step up? Either way Dawkins can work his way into the mix too.

I grabbed another safety because we have to keep adding defensive backs. We cannot rest on our laurels (as if) and think we ever are set. Sendejo may or may not be able to hang onto his job. Sanford may or may not be resigned. Blanton needs to show something at some point. It will be hard to do this year but maybe he can get in late in the year. But that is only if there is an injury or the team is not in playoff contention.

I like Taylor's size and while he may be a bit of a disappointment, in the 5th round he is not bad IMO.
AJ Klein should be able to win a spot with this LB group.
Jackson is one of my favorite prospects. He is very big and has been playing left tackle. I think he may ultimately line up at guard but having that flexibility is key.
Sabino is another young LB that may or may not make the team. But I like young players with upside.

Well there it is. I hope that you can watch your team(s) and provide some feedback on players you think that can make it in the NFL
