Of the 32 teams in the NFL, 29 have allowed 400 total yards or more to opposing offenses in at least one game this season. The Vikings have allowed 400 total yards or more in 4 of their first 5 games.
Stopping the pass has been a huge problem for the Vikings this season as they have allowed the 2nd most passing touchdowns through 5 games with 13. Many blame the release of Antoine Winfield as the main reason for the struggles of the Vikings pass defense. Last time I checked, Winfield didn’t play linebacker and Vikings linebackers have allowed a league leading 6 touchdowns this season to opposing tight ends.
One player that really shouldn’t even be on the field at all anymore is Mr. Josh Robinson. Saying that Robinson has played awful this season would be a compliment. The 2nd year cornerback has 4.3 40 speed but you wouldn’t ever know that because he never uses it.
Robinson hasn’t shown the ability to be able to cover anyone this year allowing opposing wide receivers to catch 39 of 42 passes thrown their way. There is no reason why a player like that should be playing as much as Robinson has been or at all.
The defense may be better than what they have shown this season, but they haven’t been able to catch their breath. Ranking 31st in offensive time of possession, the defense has no time to recover or rest because by the time they sit on the bench Jeff Locke is already back to punt.
Josh Freeman may seem as a savior for the season to some Vikings fans, but without any improvement in the defense the struggles will continue and Freeman will eventually be regretting he signed up to wear purple and gold.
