A Brief Look At Packers/Vikings History

USA TODAY Sports

Of all the teams that the Minnesota Vikings have played throughout their existence, they haven't squared off with any team more than the Green Bay Packers. Sunday night will mark the 106th meeting between these two teams, and the 104th in the regular season (to go along with two playoff match-ups). This look back will focus solely on the regular season contests, though if you're curious, the Vikings are 1-1 against the Packers in the post-season, with exactly the same number of points scored as points allowed (41) after a 31-17 win in the 2004 playoffs and a 24-10 loss this past January.

As usual, these numbers are brought to you courtesy of the folks from Pro Football Reference.

Biggest Vikings Victory in Minnesota: 35 points, 27 September 1986 (Final score 42-7)

Biggest Packers Victory in Minnesota: 29 points, 1 November 1964 (Final score 42-13)

And a few miscellaneous items. . .

-We know the success that Adrian Peterson has had against the Packers in his career. The reigning MVP has rushed for more yards against Green Bay than against any other team, accumulating 1,442 yards on 257 carries in 12 games.

-Christian Ponder, who will again be starting for Minnesota, made his first NFL start against the Packers in 2011. While he has a record of 1-3 against the Packers, he has thrown more touchdown passes against them (6) than interceptions (5), and his last appearance against Green Bay may have been the best game of his career, helping to engineer a victory in the 2012 regular season finale to put the Vikings into the playoffs.

-Green Bay quarterback Aaron Rodgers is pretty good. We know that. But he's been better against Minnesota than just about anybody. In 11 games against the Vikings, he has a touchdown-to-interception ratio of 24/4 and has an overall quarterback rating of 116.4 against our favorite football team.

-As we all know, this will be Greg Jennings' first appearance against his former team. We know that Jennings used to kill the Vikings on a regular basis, with his 10 touchdown receptions against Minnesota being twice as many as he has against any other opponent. Can he start to return the favor on Sunday?

And that's a quick look at the history between the Vikings and the Packers going into Sunday night's contest. Hopefully the next chapter in this history book will be a positive one for Minnesota.
