Can We Get On A Roll?

With all the attention surrounding the Vikings, focusing on the addition of Josh Freeman, most of the players have remained relatively quite, and I can only hope this is because they are not letting the signing of Freeman distract them from the upcoming game against the Panthers. We saw the Vikings collect their first win under Matt Cassle, and it would be very illogical if Cassle were not the starter again this Sunday in my opinion.

Now, I do happen to believe Cassle will actually do just fine, and likely better as he becomes more acclimated to being the actual starter 2 games in a row. So, what if I am right, and Cassle does even better in his second Vikings' game as the starter and gives us our second victory? I do think the team as a whole is gradually getting better and finding more chemistry within themselves, and if they pull out another win, especially with Cassle at the helm; this team will get in a rhythm and more importantly on a winning streak. I firmly believe Cassle will continue to take advantage of the weapons at his disposal, and we will see him build upon getting the playmakers the ball, and this in turn will inspire the special teams and defense who will be slightly improving each week on their own anyway.

So, if it does unfold like I think it will; what will Frazier do? Now, I have been pretty vocal about Frazier needing to be more swift and decisive, but the best thing Frazier could do is what he usually does; sit back, watch and don't really do anything at all. Even with so many that will be clamoring for Freeman to start or the ones that actually want Ponder back in there, as long as the team keeps winning, Cassle should remain the starter.

So, what if Cassle does so well that Freeman and Ponder both remain sidelined for an extended period of time and it is several weeks before Cassle reverts back to a bad game and stinks it up? Because if Cassle gets on an unexpected roll and we are winning games because of better all around play from the whole team and especially from the QB position and say Minnesota is sitting there at something like 8-5, what does Frazier do then, and would Frazier have stuck with Cassle as long as he is played well in the first place? And if Cassle keeps performing well long enough for Minnesota to actually end up with a record like that over the next several weeks; what would be the best thing for the team if Cassle has a bad game? Give him the nod again, or pull the plug immediately in hopes of what Freeman can do?

I for one, would love to see Cassle do so well that Freeman never actually steps on the field. I understand that is not likely at all, but one thing people should keep in mind is Cassle has been around and knows how to take advantage of playmakers, which Minnesota has plenty of, and is not necessarily completely impossible that Cassle does indeed put up solid numbers with offensive playmakers available to him and ends up the starter for the rest of the season. No matter what does happen; I think this team must address the QB position early in the next draft, as in reality Ponder, Cassle and Freeman have only proved themselves to be back up caliber QBs in this league and with a starting caliber QB on this team's offense; the offense immediately becomes one of the league's best.

I don't know what will come to be, and I just want the Vikings to win. There are going to be some tough choices to be made as Frazier will be pressured to put Freeman in as soon as possible by many, and by many that would have been just as excited if it were Mark Sanchez that the Vikings signed. They have to start Cassle this Sunday, as he has earned in my opinion. And beyond that, they must base the decision of who starts the next game solely on the performance of Cassle first, then take in consideration all of the other pros and cons of Freeman and however unlikely Ponder. I think this team has a small chance to turn the season season around, and now we are going to see exactly how good a lot of our players and coaches really are; lets hope they will rise to the occasion.
