Minnesota Vikings At Seattle Seahawks: Second Quarter Open Thread

Steven Bisig-USA TODAY Sports

We're fifteen minutes into the game at CenturyLink Field, and here is my recap based on what I can see on the drive chart from NFL.com.

The Vikings got the ball first, and on their first third down attempt Christian Ponder was sacked by Cliff Avril. The sack caused a fumble, which was recovered by the Seahawks at the Minnesota 33-yard line.

Seattle's first drive saw them pick up an initial first down, but a big play by Fred Evans caused a big loss of yardage. The Seahawks turned it into a 50-yard field goal from Steven Hauschka, and took a 3-0 lead less than four minutes into the game.

The next Vikings' drive appeared to be significantly better, as the Vikings progressed down to the Seattle 34-yard line. However, another sack of Ponder and a penalty on Phil Loadholt pushed them back to a 3rd-and-19 situation. Ponder attempted to go deep to Jerome Simpson (who had been benched going into this one after his DWI incident last week), and it was incomplete. . .but Richard Sherman was called for pass interference to keep the drive alive. The drive stalled out at that point, however, and a 32-yard field goal from Blair Walsh knotted the score at 3-3.

On Seattle's next drive, the Vikings. . .forced a three-and-out? Yeah, they certainly did. The punt gave the Vikings pretty good field position at their own 36.

Minnesota proceeded to have a short three-and-out on their next drive, and the Vikings immediately surrendered a 44-yard pass from Russell Wilson to Doug Baldwin. They followed that up with a 27-yard pass from Wilson to Ricardo Lockette to move the ball to the 4-yard line, and Marshawn Lynch took it over from there to give the Seahawks a 10-3 lead.

That's where we stand as we move to the second quarter of play. Save for the big pass interference penalty, the Vikings don't appear to have done a whole heck of a lot on offense so far. They trail by a touchdown after the first fifteen minutes in Seattle.
