So What do we Vikings fans do when football isn't on and its been a rough season?? Well of course still root for them but also start looking towards that next years draft, which i already have. We have some holes on this team both on the offensive side and defensive side. We need a new QB who can use Adrian Peterson and our decent wide receiver corp to benefit himself. Honestly with all the weapons we have, Christian Ponder shouldn't be having such a terrible season like he is. But that's what you get with a quarterback who has problems with a less then average arm, terrible pocket awareness, and makes bad throws in coverage when he should just throw it away. Also sticking with offense, we need some better Guards that can create a better pocket and can create running lanes for Adrian Peterson. I think Brandon Fusco could keep his job and improve next year but look for the Vikings to get rid of Charlie Johnson, and find a guard to take his place in the draft. Johnson has been slow and very unproductive since he got here in Minnesota. Now defensive side, we need some Corners definitely and and defensive lineman. Chris Cook has been a bust since drafting him, Yes he has limited Calvin Johnson but other then that what does he have to show? No Interceptions? not being able to stay healthy enough to stay on the field. Josh Robinson is young but also not stepping up to his potential, Quarterbacks have the best QBR rating throwing against him then any other corner back in the league. With all that being said here is my mock draft for 2014...
RD. 1 (2) Marcus Mariota. I know there is a chance that he doesn't declare this draft but if he does i think we will be in line to snatch him up. I could go with Bridgewater here as well but with Jacksonville in line to have the 1st pick I figure that either Mariota or Bridgewater will be drafted 1st overall. Now what if Mariota or Bridgewater aren't available? I'd say turn to the defensive side of the ball because i'm not 100% sold on Manziel yet. So my defensive pick would have to be Anthony Barr the Outside Linebacker from UCLA.
RD. 2 (2) Loucheiz Purifoy. Im sticking with defense here. There is a chance Purifoy goes in the 1st Round but there might be a chance he falls to the 2nd round. Standing at 6"1 he will start in favor of Chris Cook and our secondary would be better off with Purifoy starting alongside Xavier Rhodes.
RD. 3 (2) A.J McCarron. Im not quite sure what's making his draft stock fall, because i like what i have seen from this guy but scouts have this guy listed going anywhere from the 2nd Round to the 4th round. The guy seems to have a decent arm and leadership that it takes to lead a team to victories. With possibly a new head coach and coaching staff, i think they would fix whatever is possibly wrong with McCarron and i see him starting over Ponder and Freeman (if he's still in Minnesota). If he doesn't get the start it wouldn't take long before Ponder screwed up and would get benched in favor of AJ.
RD. 3 (30 from Seattle) Jack Mewhort. With this pick i get the big bodied Offensive Guard out of Ohio State to help shore up that offensive line.
RD. 4 (2) Larry Webster- DE 6"7 (Bloomsburg)
RD. 5 (2) Silas Redd- RB 5"10 (USC) Picked him for depth at running back since Toby Gerhart isn't guaranteed to be back with the Vikings in 2014.
RD. 6 (2) Keith McGill- CB 6"3 (Utah) I don't know much about him but I'd draft him for more depth at CB and look at Seattle. They have had success with drafting larger corner backs so maybe time for Minnesota to find their diamond in the rough
RD. 7 (2) Bruce Gaston- DT 6"2 (Purdue) The reason I didn't choose a DT in the earlier rounds is because i figure the guy i want (Daniel McCullers would already be gone). Plus i see this as mainly a depth thing with both Fred Evans and Letroy Guion having injuries this year, and who knows if either one will remain in Minnesota. I really would like to see Minnesota lure 2014 NFL Free Agent, Henry Melton out of Chicago. Henry Melton alongside Shariff Floyd, would help us get back to being able to stop the run more efficiently and of course keep pressure on the Quarterbacks.
I tried to find the best information on these players i chose, its still early for this so please no super negative comments please. Im just an Optimistic fan that thinks we will find some decent players in the 2014 NFL draft and hopefully turn it around in 2014. SKOL
