Which College Players Are Future Vikings Bowl Week 1 Review and Bowl Week 2 Primer

Bob Levey

The first week of Bowl games is done. I thought that Syracuse beating Minnesota was a mild upset. Utah State beating Northern Illinois was also an upset. USC beating Fresno State could be considered an upset. The Colorado State vs Washington State game was pretty good.

There were some good and bad performances in the bowl games too.

Cody Hoffman caught 12 passes for 167 yards with 0 TDs.
Marqise Lee caught 7 passes for 118 yards with 2 TDs.
Ryan Grant caught 7 passes for 113 yards with 0 TDs.
Gator Hoskins caught 6 passes for 104 yards with 2 TDs.

I thought Hoffman did well.  But as I said last week, "I am not a fan of the bowl games and while I watch them, I do not put much stock into them".  It is just another piece to consider when you evaluate a player.  For me, anytime a team takes 30 days off before playing another game, well, that cannot be good for anyting besides healing up some bumps and bruises.

I have not updated the stats to include the bowl games.

Here are the top draft eligible performers stats ...

I will base my mock off the record each week. After last week the team is 5-10-1 and are locked into the #8 spot.

I still think they probably will take the best QB available because trading up is not easy to do and could prove to be costly.  I will say that if Hundley, Bortles, and Marriota all decide to come out then there could be some QBs that will fall into the second round where many believe they should be taken.

Here is my mock for this week.  I am going to use the drafttek.com consensus mock draft as a guide
http://www.drafttek.com/2014-NFL-Mock-Draft-Round1.asp ...

Trade! I am sticking with the trade of AP to the Cowboys for their 2014 1st round pick, 2015 3rd round pick (conditional), and DeMarco Murray.

8. Mike Evans  WR  Texas A&M  rSo  6-5  225

Yes a WR at #8.  WTF am I thinking?  I am thinking that all the Vikings have is a 31 year old (on Sept 21, 2014) Greg Jennings and Patterson.  Wright is OK.  Childs playing would be great but I cannot put much stock in that until we actually see the kid play.  I hope he does but by no means does that mean the team is set at WR.  Then we have Rodney Smith, and Adam Theilen.  Joe Webb may not even get re-signed.  Evan is rated #8 at cbssports and #11 at drafttek.  Not a bad pick although CJ Mosley would be good here too.  I  just like the thought of Evans and Patterson.

18. Derek Carr  QB  Fresno State  rSr  6-3  215

drafttek has the Vikings taking Brett Hundley but since he has not declared yet, I cannot select him in a mock yet.  They have Carr going to Cleveland at #24 and they think it is a +9 pick which means if he was picked at #15 then that would be about right.

I am also sticking with my trade up to the Redskins pick at #34.

Trade!  The Vikings trade the #40 pick and the #104 pick to the Redskins for the #34 pick.
I think the Redskins will be looking to get extra picks.

34.  Stephon Tuitt  DE  Notre Dame  Jr  6-6  312

The Vikings need to get another defensive lineman and Tuitt has the size to fit anywhere along the line.

http://www.nfl.com/news/story/0ap2000000304962/article/notre-dames-stephon-tuitt-dominates-in-pinstripe-bowl

72. Kyle Van Noy  OLB  Brigham Young  rSr  6-3  245

Van Noy is all the way at #87 so there is no way the Vikings can pass on him at #72 even though Timmy Jernigan is a good pick too.  I expect and hope the Vikings address the DT spot in free agency.  Plus there are some other players they can grab later too.

96. Kelcy Quarles  DT  South Carolina  Jr  6-3  298

I think Quarles is going to be a good addition to the defensive line.

200. Nickoe Whitley *  FS  Mississippi State  rSr  6-0  205

http://www.nfldraftscout.com/ratings/dsprofile.php?pyid=91145&draftyear=2014&genpos=FS

Trade!  The Vikings trade the their 2014 6th round pick to the 49ers for their #219 pick.

219. Trey Millard *  FB  Oklahoma  Sr  6-2  253

MOAR FULLBACK! The Vikings make a very shrewd move by trading a pick to get the multi-talented Millard.  He suffered an ACL injury on Oct 26th and likely will not even play in 2014.  But the Vikings will be able to stash him on IR for the season.  By 2015, he should be good to go and Felton could be gone by then as well.

I have doubts about Carr lasting to #18 but he is in this mock.  If Hundley, Mariotta, and Bortles all declare then there could be a QB or two that drop.  I know Evan is a risky pick but I like him and thinks he could fit well with the offense.  I went heavy with the defensive line and did not even address the guard position.  I think the Vikings will have to make due via free agency for one more year.  Plus, if Spencer Long goes undrafted due to injury then he could possibly be a "steal" once he plays.  Van Noy is a no brainer IMO.

Here is a straight up draft with no trades ...

8. Jake Matthews  OT  Texas A&M  Sr  6-5  305
40. Ryan Shazier  OLB  Ohio State  Jr  6-2  230
