A Brief Look At Vikings/Ravens History

Kirby Lee-USA TODAY Sports

As you'd probably expect, there isn't a whole lot of history to be had between the Minnesota Vikings and the Baltimore Ravens. When the team became the Indianapolis Colts in 1984, they took the team's history from Baltimore with them. However, when the (original) Cleveland Browns moved to Baltimore in 1996, the team's history stayed in Cleveland and the Ravens basically started fresh.

Because of this, there haven't been very many match-ups between these two teams. This is only the fifth time these teams will do battle, and the fourth time that it has happened in Baltimore. So, let's take a look at the short history of this series.

As always, these facts and figures are brought to you by the folks from Pro Football Reference.

Total Games Between the Vikings and the Ravens: 4

All-Time Record: Tied, 2-2

Total Vikings Points Scored, Head-to-Head: 97 (24.3 points/game)

Total Ravens Points Scored, Head-to-Head: 108 (27 points/game)

Longest Vikings Winning Streak: 1 (two separate occasions)

Longest Ravens Winning Streak: 2 (7 January 2002 - 25 December 2005)

Most Recent Vikings Victory in Baltimore13 December 1998 (Final score 38-28)

Most Recent Ravens Victory in Baltimore25 December 2005 (Final score 30-23)

Biggest Vikings Victory in Baltimore: 10 points, 13 December 1998 (Final score 38-28)

Biggest Ravens Victory in Baltimore: 16 points, 7 January 2002 (Final score 19-3)

And a couple of other pieces of info. . .

-The only game between these two teams that took place in the Metrodome happened in 2009, as the Vikings survived a last-second field goal attempt to escape with a 33-31 victory. Adrian Peterson had a very nice game that afternoon, carrying the ball 22 times for 143 yards, though he did not get into the end zone. That is Peterson's only appearance to date against the Ravens.

-Joe Flacco tore up the Vikings pretty good in that one, too, in his only career appearance against Minnesota. Flacco completed 28-of-43 pass attempts for 385 yards and two touchdowns.

-Vikings' starting quarterback Matt Cassel has only faced the Ravens once in his career, and it didn't go terribly well. On 7 October 2012, he completed 9-of-15 passes for 92 yards, got intercepted twice, and lost a fumble as the Kansas City Chiefs lost to Baltimore, 9-6. That was the game where the fans at Arrowhead Stadium infamously booed Cassel after he suffered a concussion in the fourth quarter and had to leave the game.

-One guy that has had some pretty good success against the Ravens is wide receiver Jerome Simpson. In three career games against the Ravens, Simpson has 25 catches for 329 yards and a touchdown. In the last game of the 2010 season, he had 12 catches for 123 yards against Baltimore, and he had an eight-catch, 152-yard game against them in 2011.

And that's a quick look at the history between the Minnesota Vikings and the Baltimore Ravens, limited though it might be.
