What is the Best Approach to Improving the Wide Receiver Position?

The Vikings are a team that must upgrade the wide receiver position if they want to take that next step, and if Christian Ponder is to take a significant step as well. With the news surrounding Percy Harvin; this is a very important time for Minnesota over the next couple months.

There are so many opinions of what everyone thinks the Vikings should do in regards to the WR position, and I am no different. In my opinion, the number one priority is signing Harvin to long term deal. I know others are not so inclined with all of the rumors floating around, and support him being traded. I do not; he is second most valuable player on the team to me, and we need WRs; we do not need to lose are best one.

There are inflated ideas of who Minnesota will pick up in free agency and the draft, but those are not sure things. Minnesota has two sure things to build off in Harvin and Wright and beyond them the fat has to be trimmed. There is no way Jenkins should play next year for what he is in line to make; IMO if he is to stay, it should be for the league minimum as a number four receiver at best. Minnesota needs WRs, but so do quite a few other teams that are more than likely willing to pay more.

There's some solid mid level F/A WRs out there, but the problem is do we really want to pay a guy around 4 or 5/million a year for mediocre stats-because more than likely that's what it's going to take to get someone like that,(though, I do hope I am wrong). If we can get a guy like Domenik Hixon or Brandon Gibson or even Brian Hartline or Danny Amendola for around 3 million a year, I would be happy with that. I don't know if that will happen and doubt Spieman will want to pay any of those guys more than that. Those are guys teams like N.E., Miami, K.C. will be targeting as well as other teams like the Steelers and the Browns and others. If Spielman cannot find an affordable number 2 or 3 type of guy, maybe he should make a splash and not a Dwayne Bowe one, but a Mike Wallace splash, and I do think there is enough cap room to be made to get both Wallace and Percy signed. That would be the best acquisition to the team with Harvin and Wright in my opinion. Along with resigning Simpson on the cheap and converting Webb to more of a splash player to see if it can work and also drafting a second round WR, and maybe putting Burton, if worthy on the practice squad as at least he can block.

I think the Vikings will acquire at least one solid WR in the upcoming draft, but it will probably be 2014 before we see much of an impact. That is why I think there must be a slightly different approach in free agency in regards to at least going after one receiver and probably one defensive player too. Jerome Simpson might be inclined to sign for another year for less money and wouldn't be a bad idea. I really only see two new WRs being changed out in the line up though; one going out for sure is Aromashado and the other will be Jenkins or Burton or both if they promote a practice squad guy, Webb gets activated as a WR or Greg Childs makes a remarkable return.
