We've officially gotten into "silly season" in the NFL, as the 2013 NFL Combine is underway in Indianapolis and the rumors are starting to fly fast and furious about free agency.
One of the rumors that came across the Twitter yesterday, courtesy of ESPN 1500's Tom Pelissero, leaves me unable to decide whether I should laugh or cry. Check this out.
Lot of opinions here about what top receiver UFAs may command. Heard Greg Jennings wants $14M/year. Tough to see that happening.— Tom Pelissero (@TomPelissero) February 22, 2013
Now, I'll put this out there. Greg Jennings is a nice receiver. I think he'd potentially be a nice fit with the Minnesota Vikings if the team decided to go after him.
And if that rumor is true, Greg Jennings is also out of his damn mind.
A $14 million salary in 2013 would make Greg Jennings. . .a wide receiver that will turn 30 in September. . .the sixth-highest paid player in the National Football League, according to Spotrac. It would also make him the highest paid wide receiver, in terms of base salary (and only Houston's Andre Johnson would have a higher cap figure at the wide receiver position). As a reference, according to Spotrac, Adrian Peterson's base salary for 2013 is $11.25 million, and his total cap hit is $13.9 million.
If someone wants to give Greg Jennings "Adrian Peterson money," that's fine by me. I just hope to heck that it isn't the Minnesota Vikings, that's all.
Like I said, it is "silly season," so take this rumor with as many grains of salt as you deem necessary. I just thought it was interesting that it came out at the Scouting Combine.
