Somebody get me a spoon, cuz I'm about to stir the pot.
So the 49ers traded Alex Smith to the Chiefs today, getting a some draft picks in return. Then rumors started casually popping up around here that the 49ers would use those picks to package for a deal to trade for our own Percy Harvin. Meanwhile, rumors are bursting around the league that the 49ers will actually use those picks to acquire Jets CB Darrelle Revis.
Our any of these true? Maybe. But , I have a theory in mind. There would be no reason that the 49ers wouldn't want either player. An explosive slot receiver to mix in with a deep threat in Crabtree and a great TE in Davis. Or a shut down corner to improve an already talent filled defense. So which would they want more? Good question. Revis is coming off of a knee injury and Harvin has some apparent attitude issues. Both of their respective clubs have said that they don't intend on trading them, while rumors abound to the contrary.
Me thinks the 49ers are playing the situation to their advantage. After the Smith deal went down, rumors pop up stating the team's interest in either player. A situation like that could lure the Vikings and Jets into a race for those picks, if indeed they want them and want to get rid of the aforementioned players involved. If the Jets feel there is credibility to the Harvin deal, they may rush to get the Revis deal done quicker, or vice versa, with the Viking taking the bait instead.
If, IF, that is how the 49ers are playing it, and it works, all I can say is....Bravo, 49ers, Bravo.
Either way, the Niners have set up a nice Xanatos Gambit for themselves, because even if they don't get either player, they still have some pretty good picks to work with and a still pretty talented team.
