Free Agency: Vikings Re-Sign Backup Lineman Joe Berger To 1-Year Deal

The Vikings have re-signed versatile backup lineman Joe Berger to a one-year contract.

There already seems to be a lot of moving pieces with the Vikings early in free agency, but offensive line doesn't seem to be one of them.

After locking up starting right tackle Phil Loadholt in a multi-year deal, the Vikings ensured that they had some depth at O-line by re-signing backup Joe Berger to a one-year tender. According to 1500 ESPN, it's a minimum salary deal that lets the Vikings save some space against the salary cap. He'll get a signing bonus of $65,000 to go along with his $880,000 base salary.

Berger has appeared in 29 games for the Vikings since joining the team in 2011, starting seven of those games. His biggest asset is his versatility--he can play multiple spots on the line including center.

As the old saying goes, "If it ain't broke, don't fix it." The Vikings seem to be employing that approach with their offensive line this offseason after Adrian Peterson almost set the rushing record running behind them last year. Although it sounds like Geoff Schwartz probably won't return, the remainder of the line looks like it will stay in tact from last season. Berger's fellow backup Troy Kropog received an exclusive-rights tender on Monday and will be back as well.

Stay tuned for updates as they happen. Hopefully Rick Spielman has bigger moves up his sleeve in the near future.
