A Completely Different Approach to the Draft

I got this idea reading some of the guys' comments about the latest DN mock draft. I put together a very optimistic mock draft a couple weeks ago. I'm going to take a different approach this time and see how crazy you guys will think this is. With all of the positions of need and the talent being fairly deep at a few of our needs. But what if we went another direction? What if a couple of the starters on the roster are not necessarily the automatic starters again this year? Maybe we trade off couple more players like Gerhart and Robison. Maybe we do sign Urlacher and maybe we sign Darius Heyward-Bay and maybe they are putting up another smokescreen and Joe Webb is going to be our new WR and return man and Greg Childs is really having a fantastic recovery and that's why they are so tight lipped about his progress and he is in his best physical shape he was when he was talked about as a potential first round pick. What about this for an unlikely draft?

Round 1 OG Jonathan Cooper, QB Matt Barkley

Round 2 DE Cornellius Carradine

Round 3 C Barret Jones

Round 4 ILB Jon Bostic, RB Marcus Lattimore

Round 5 CB Tharold Simon

Round 6 DT T.J. Barnes

Round 7 CB Marc Anthony, WR Marcus Davis, P Quinn Sharp

So with this bizarre approach and including a couple more free agent signings and trading and releasing a couple more players that would free up the cap room to do so, here is potentially what the roster could look like.

QBs 1st string Christian Ponder/Matt Barkley? Matt Cassle

RBs Adrian Peterson, Marcus Lattimore, Matt Asiata

FB Jerome Felton

WRs Greg Jennings, Jarius Wright, Greg Childs, Jerome Simpson, Darius Heyward-Bay, Joe Webb, Marcus Davis

TEs Kyle Rudolph, Rhett Ellison, John Carlson

Starting Offensive Line: LT Matt Kalil, LG Jonathan Cooper, C John Sullivan, RG Barret Jones, RG Phil Loadholt

Rotating Defensive Line: DE Jared Allen, DT Kevin Williams, DT T.J. Barnes, DT/DE Everson Griffen, DT/DE Cornellius Carradine, DT Christain Ballard

MLB Brian Urlacher, SLB Erin Henderson, MLB/SLB Jon Bostic, WLB Chad Greenway

CBs Chris Cook, Antoine Winfield, Josh Robinson. A.J. Jefferson, Tharold Simon, Marc Anthony

Safeties Harrison Smith, Jamarca Sanford, Raymond Mistral, Robert Blanton

K Blair Walsh, P Quinn Sharp

PR, KR Jarius Wright, Josh Robinson, Joe Webb, Darius Heyward-Bay

Additions: A. Winfield, B. Urlacher, D. Heyward-Bay

Cuts/Trades: B. Robison, T. Gerhart, C. Johnson, M. Sherrals, S. Burton, M.B. Thompson, F. Evans, L. Guion, Kluwe

Crazy approach right, but what if Barkley is really good? And say what you want, but Ponder still might be the guy, who knows? But what we do know is he is already a damn good back up. Putting together an even better, if not elite O-line for AP & Lattimore & Time for our QB to throw the ball & WRs to Stretch the field a little more for our RBs sounds good. The additions to the defense are slight, but I still think this would be an improved group over last year. Well, there you go; an unlikely approach, but maybe one that would work. What do you guys think; could this really work, or would this approach set the franchise back?
