Lessons learned from Round 1 of 2013 Draft

Cordarrelle Patterson’s success or lack thereof, will determine Rick Spielman’s legacy as the Vikings GM

Rick wagered a lot of picks to get this kid, and if it blows up in his face, we will never forget it. However, if Patterson does reach his potential, it will add to Rick’s resume as a draft day connoisseur.

The Vikings are nowhere near done with free agency

This seem to go without saying, seeing as every team adds a slew of undrafted rookies after the draft, but the Vikings will also be back in the hunt on the veteran market as well. With most of our mid round picks gone, the opportunity to add valuable depth is also gone. I can already think of some players the Vikes will target, see next item.

The Vikings are back in the hunt for Urlacher

Without picks in rounds 2 and 3, it will be tough to get a guy that will make an immediate impact at linebacker. The Vikings were earlier in pursuit of Urlacher, but backed off. It seemed the Vikings would seek there guy in the early part of the draft, but now, we will likely miss out on guys like Manti Te’o, Kevin Minter and Arthur Brown.

Don’t count us out of Day 2 yet

There are still needs to be filled. I’m sure Rick is working the phones heavy and exploring the possibility of moving back up into rounds 2 or 3. Remember, we didn’t have a 2nd rounder last year, and we were okay. A move back into the 3rd is certainly a possibility. The 2nd may be a bit of a stretch though.
