We have another interesting pairing for you in this match-up in the first round of our Greatest Viking Of All Time Tournament, as one half of one of the team's best defensive tackle tandems takes on the man that is currently constructing our favorite football team.
Alma Mater: Texas A&M
Acquired by Minnesota: Signed as free agent prior to 2005 season
Seasons in Minnesota: 6 (2005-2010)
Position: Defensive Tackle
As half of the famed "Williams Wall" that held down the middle of the Vikings' defense for six seasons, "Phat" Pat may have been the best run-stuffing defensive tackle of his era. When paired with Kevin Williams, it was nearly impossible to run up the middle against the Vikings' defense. Though he was never known for his pass rush, he was so thoroughly dominant as a run stopper that he made the Pro Bowl three times from 2006 to 2008, and was a second-team All-Pro in 2007.
Couldn't find any decent highlight videos, so why not something offbeat?
Alma Mater: Southern Illinois University
Acquired by Vikings: Hired by Vikings prior to 2006 season
Seasons in Minnesota: 7 (2006-present)
Position: General Manager
Rick Spielman was originally hired as the Vice President of Player Personnel for the Minnesota Vikings, and soon became part of the "Triangle of Authority" after Fran Foley was canned shortly after the 2006 NFL Draft. The Vikings have done pretty well for themselves in the draft since Spielman has been in the front office, hitting on first-round picks such as Adrian Peterson, Percy Harvin, and trading for Jared Allen. He was promoted to General Manager following the 2011 season, and appears to have put together a couple of masterful drafts for the Vikings in 2012 and 2013.
Here's a review of how the voting process works, folks.
-If you want to vote for Pat Williams, rec the comment that says, "Vote - Pat Williams"
-If you want to vote for Rick Spielman, rec the comment that says, "Vote - Rick Spielman"
Don't rec both comments. . .we're on the honor system here, folks. Although I don't know why you'd rec both anyway. . .you'd end up just canceling yourself out.
Please do not reply to either of the top two comments. . .if you want to debate or make your case or what have you, feel free to do so underneath those top two comments. Remember. . .only recs count, so make sure that's how you register your vote.
The voting will remain open until 8 AM Central time tomorrow, at which point the next two match-ups will be posted.
Have at it, everybody!
