We're now into the home stretch of the first round of our Greatest Viking Of All Time Tournament, ladies and gentlemen! In this first round match-up, we have another stalwart presence for the Minnesota Vikings in the middle of the defensive line taking on a quarterback that had a couple of different stretches with the team.
Alma Mater: Oklahoma State University
Acquired by Vikings: Round 1, 2003 NFL Draft
Seasons in Minnesota: 10 (2003-2012)
Position: Defensive tackle
The career of Kevin Williams got off to a bit of a rough start, as the Vikings chose him with the 9th selection in the 2003 NFL Draft. The problem with this is that the Vikings were slated to pick at #7, and got passed up by two teams when they thought they had a trade in place with the Baltimore Ravens. As it turns out, the Vikings could have waited a couple more hours to take Williams and still gotten themselves a bargain. Currently the longest tenured member of the roster, Williams is a six-time Pro Bowler and a five-time All-Pro, as well as a member of the NFL's All-Decade team for the 2000s. His 56.5 career sacks place him in fourth on the Vikings' all-time list.
How on earth do you find a scooter to hold someone that size? Man.
Alma Mater: Florida State University
Acquired by Vikings: Round 9, 1992 NFL Draft
Seasons in Minnesota: 7 (1994-1998; 2005-2006)
Drafted by the Vikings despite never starting a game in college at Florida State, Johnson was the Vikings' third-string quarterback and didn't see any action until 1994. An injury to Warren Moon pressed him into action halfway through the 1996 season, and he held onto the starting job until he was injured in 1998. After stops in Washington and Tampa Bay, he came back to Minnesota in 2005, where he nearly got the Vikings into the post-season after replacing the injured Daunte Culpepper. Johnson's 11,098 career yards and 48 touchdown passes put him fifth in team history in both of those categories. And, unless I've missed another instance of it, he's the only guy in NFL history to do this.
Here's a review of how the voting process works, folks.
-If you want to vote for Kevin Williams, rec the comment that says, "Vote - Kevin Williams"
-If you want to vote for Brad Johnson, rec the comment that says, "Vote - Brad Johnson"
Don't rec both comments. . .we're on the honor system here, folks. Although I don't know why you'd rec both anyway. . .you'd end up just canceling yourself out.
Please do not reply to either of the top two comments. . .if you want to debate or make your case or what have you, feel free to do so underneath those top two comments. Remember. . .only recs count, so make sure that's how you register your vote.
The voting will remain open until 8 AM Central time tomorrow, at which point the next two match-ups will be posted.
Have at it, everybody!
