Honestly, I can't wait to read some of the comments that will be left on this post. Anyway, last night, I watched the game against the Bills again since I wasn't able to watch it in depth Friday night. I know the offense struggled, but it was the second preseason game and I don't think anyone was expecting the Bills to show their new blitz packages before the regular season. With all the pressure that was given to Ponder and the bad snap, I saw a quarterback who improved on 2 things from last year. I will point out 2 plays that led me to believe this. Many of you would say, it was only 2 plays, but the sample size was small.
Last season, Ponder struggled containing his composure and often scrambled when it was unnecessary. This play was on the drive where the Vikings got a field goal. Ponder was once again being pressured, specifically on the right side of the line. He was able to slide over to the left side while staying in the pocket and connected to a wide open Rudolph near the sideline. Last year, Ponder would have either scrambled, threw the ball away, or make some dumb pass. If Ponder is able to stick in the pocket and go through his progressions, the Vikings passing game will excel, especially with Jennings and Rudolph as security blankets.
The other play was on the same drive. As Jennings has said in interviews, Ponder had trouble trusting his receivers to be in the spot and to make the catch. On this play, Ponder was forced to scramble to his left. While on the run, Ponder threw a rifle (probably the hardest throw I've ever seen from him) to Rudolph as he was covered by 2 defenders. The pass was very accurate as it hit Rudolph on the run so he was able to TRY to run after the catch.
The one problem with all of this: Ponder's inconsistency. If Ponder is able to remain consistent and contain this improvements explain above, this can be a very dangerous team.
CONSISTENT Ponder Predictions: 3850 yards, 27TD, 11 INT
INCONSISTENT Ponder Predictions: 3000 yards, 19 TD, 16 INT
