As we get closer to the 1st cut-down date it's time to examine if there are any players who the Vikings would be better off trading (even for low round draft picks), rather than just releasing at the second cut-down.
These are typically players which have played well enough to warrant a roster spot, but they play a position which is a position of strength for the team. They are also players which can't be put on the practice squad either because of too much experience or because some other team would scoop them up beforehand.
I feel the 2 most likely candidates are: 1) Toby Gerhart: he has played well and it's nice to have a reliable back-up (minus the 49ers game last year). However, I think all of us have been impressed with Randle, Banyard and Zach Line in addition to the steadiness of Asiata. I think it's conceivable that a team might offer a 4th or 5th round pick for him.
2) Christian Ballard: I've always liked him and would prefer the Vikings to keep him, but it's going to be difficult for them to keep 5 DTs. I think he has shown enough flash in his first 2 seasons for someone to offer a 6th round pick.
Even better would be if either of these players could be swapped for a decent back-up OL.
Feel free to suggest other players that are possiblities and their possible compensation.
