DL Getting Thin. What To Do?

Two orthopedic specialists said Vikings Pro Bowl defensive tackle Kevin Williams is fortunate he didn't suffer a season-ending knee injury after a low block in Sunday night's game against the San Francisco 49ers.

But the two specialists added that Williams could miss several games -- possibly three to six weeks -- based on the location of what Vikings coach Leslie Frazier termed a "significant bone contusion."

"The important thing is, thank God he didn't tear the ACL because that would have been the next thing to go," said Dr. Daniel Kharrazi, a partner at Kerlan-Jobe Orthopedic Clinic and the orthopedic consultant to the Los Angeles Lakers. Added Dr. David Thorson of White Bear Lake, "If you're not patient, you could aggravate the cartilage, and you're looking at microfracture surgery."
