I think this season is going to be awful ( I hope I am wrong). But I think this season has been set up for years. We have been building to a terrible season for quite some time, and I think this year will be the year that the Vikings pay for poor roster management.
Spielman has done fairly well (besides the drafting of Christian Ponder) and has made some great moves, but like the little boy from Holland there may have been to many holes in the dike to plug. He has done well to cover up for the previous establishments follies. But I think it has finally caught up. We just kept plugging players into roles that they are/were not ready for. I am not sure when it started, but it was quite some time ago. I think the earliest I would dare trace it back to is TJack. He never had to earn the starting QB job. It was gifted to him despite the fact he did not show nearly enough to earn the job. Pete Caroll had his big free agent QB Matt Flynn in a QB competition against TJack and Russell Wilson. And then went with the rookie. Leslie Frazier would not have the cajones to do that.
Then we come to Pat Williams. We never filled or even attempted to fill the void he left. Fred Evans and Letroy Guion were rotational players and neither one was primed to fill the role of a starting DT, let alone the NT position that PWill fit so well. EJ Henderson was a good MLB for us, but they let him go in favor of Brinkley. Brinkley played okay in replacement for EJ when he was hurt, but had not shown enough to say he was fitting of being anointed a starting job.
Charlie Johnson was an emergency relief LT for when we cut McKinnie. He did a poor job at LT and was replaced by Khalil, and now he is doing a poor job at LG. He has not been challenged nor have they brought anyone into challenge. Fusco was by all accounts (besides the Vikings coaching staff) beaten out by Schwartz, but they gave the nod to Fusco and let Schwartz walk.
Winfield was a regretfully necessary decision because of salary cap restraints. And they at least brought in some talent via draft and free agency.
Marcus Sherels is an oddity; he is good at returning but a complete travesty as a CB. He should be moved to WR because at least we wont have to watch him get burned in coverage.
I am sure there are others but these are only a handful I can think of.
In summary this season is the set up of years of bad work and poor management. I think poor talent evaluation plays a role as well as coaching. I am convinced the Leslie Frazier, although likable, is not a head coach. He doesnt make the tough calls. Firing Musgrave this offseason would have been justified only taking into account of his play calling and completely discounting his ability to judge and use talent.
