I've been reading comments and seeing news articles that are spouting nonsense about how coach Frazier is committing to Christian Ponder based on the first thing he mentioned at the press conference yesterday afternoon. Seriously, did no one actually watch the entire press conference? I don't know which press conference this guy watched or this guy, but I watched the whole thing and I came away with a decidedly different impression. I would invite you all to sit through it as well. So, everyone, go watch this video, and fast forward to the 5'26" mark where Frazier answers a direct question about Ponder vs Cassel. If you're too lazy to do it, here is the transcript.
When you said that Christian Ponder is the starting quarterback, is that based on your depth chart, and was that because a starter can't lose his job because of injury, or what were your thoughts there?
It's too soon after the game, Jim, for me to assess it. I don't know what I would be basing it on, other than what I have seen with my naked eye. I have to look at the tape, look at our football team and then come back and look at where we are and what we need to do to come out of the BYE to be a better football team. So, that's what I base it on. I think it would be premature for me to say anything other than what I'm saying now."
So, while it is true that Frazier opened the press conference by saying, "Christian Ponder is our starting quarterback", at the end he also said that he needed to look at the tape to make an assessment. If Ponder was really the starting QB, then it would be end of story, and you wouldn't have to go and look at the tape, would you? No, you wouldn't. In my opinion, this is a pretty clear case where Frazier is letting on to anyone who will listen that Matt Cassel has a very good shot at being the starting QB for the Vikings in the short term. And Frazier, being the classy guy that he is, isn't about to strip Ponder of his depth chart position publicly in front of the media, mere minutes after the game. He said all the right things, and left the door wide open to make a switch at QB.
And I believe that he will.
