2014 MOCK DRAFT: OPTION 3 OF 4

MOCK DRAFT OPTION 3: QB IN THE THIRD ROUND

This posting includes the third of four options I have developed (I posted Options 1 and 2 earlier this week). My strategy with the 4 Mock Drafts is to take a look at how it may play out with the Vikings drafting a QB in at least one of the first three picks we have in this years draft. Each Mock Draft option has a QB being selected one round later than the previous Mock Draft (Options 3 and 4 have a QB selected with the first pick in Round 3).

I used typical draft-site resources to do the research on the picks (e.g., NFL DraftScout, DraftTek, WalterFootball, DraftSite, etc.) including the player draftpool and the projected rounds in which they will potentially be available. I also based the picks on what seems to be the concensus in regards to our most pressing team needs.

So here we go, Mock Draft Option 3 is below.

ROUND 1

With the 8th pick in round 1 the Vikings select:

ILB - C.J. Mosley, Alabama - 6’2” 232lbs.

A 2 1/2 year starter, in 2013 he had 102 tackles and 9 tackles for loss, 5 pass breakups, 8 quarterback hurries and a forced fumble. He was the Alabama Defensive Player of the week 11 times in 12 games and ranks fourth in school history with 313 tackles. Mosley recieved many awards in 2013 including the Walter Camp First Team All-American; Associated Press and Coaches All-SEC First Team; SEC Co-Defensive Player of the Year (Coaches); and the Butkus Award Winner.

ROUND 2

With the 8th pick in Round 2 (40th overall), the Vikings select:

OG - Xavier Su'a-Filo, UCLA - 6'3" 305lbs.

He is a high-character two year starter and a well-rounded blocker in the run game and pass protection. In 2013 he was also selected to the All-Pac-12 First Team at OG (COACHES).

ROUND 3

With the 8th pick in Round 3 (72nd overall), the Vikings select:

QB - Tajh Boyd Clemson, 6'1" 225lbs.

A three year starter, this is the third consecutive year Boyd has made first or second-team All-ACC (2013 All-SEC Second Team Media and Coaches). In 2013 Boyd completed 252-373 passes for 3,473 yards and 29 touchdowns. He ranks first in the ACC in total offense with 312.2 yards per game and is second in passing efficiency, passing yards per game and touchdown passes. He is the ACC's career leader in touchdown passes (102) and touchdown responsibility (127).

(Optional Round 3 QB pick: QB – David Fales, SJSU - 6'2" 220lbs.)

ROUND 3 (2nd pick in Round 3)

With the 32nd pick in Round 3 (96th overall - Seahawks pick gained from the 2013 Percy Harvin trade), the Vikings select:

DT - Kelcy Quarles, South Carolina - 6’3” 293lbs.

In 2013 Quarles was the team leader in tackles for loss with 13.5 as well as a team-high 9.5 sacks. He also totaled 36 tackles, a pass breakup, a fumble recovery and 3 quarterback hurries. He was selected to the 2013 All-SEC First Team at DT (Associated Press and Coaches).

ROUND 4

With the 8th pick in Round 4 (104th overall), the Vikings select:

RB - De'Anthony Thomas, Oregon - 5’9” 176lbs.

A three year starter, in 2013, Thomas had 93 carries for 581 yards and eight touchdowns. He also had 20 receptions for 222 yards and a score. Thomas missed 4 games in 2013 due to injury. In 2012 Thomas ran for 701 yards (7.6 average) and 11 touchdowns. He also caught 45 passes for 455 yards and five scores. Thomas also handled kicks, averaging 24 yards per kick return and 17 yards per punt return, returning both a kick and a punt for a touchdown. In 2011 He averaged 10.8 yards per carry and totaled 595 yards with seven touchdowns on 55 carries. He also caught 46 passes for 605 yards and nine touchdowns and averaged 27 yards per kick return, taking two back for touchdowns. Thomas would serve as a "change of pace" RB.

ROUND 5

With the 8th pick in Round 5 (136th overall), the Vikings select:

SS – Isaiah Lewis, Michigan State - 5'10" 208lbs.

A three year starter, Lewis had 54 tackles, two interceptions and eight passes batted. Lewis was selected to the 2013 All-Big 10 First Team at SS.

ROUND 6

With the 8th pick in Round 6 (168th overall), the Vikings select:

DE - Taylor Hart, Oregon - 6'5" 292lbs.

A three year starter, in 2013 Hart had 75 tackles, six tackles for a loss and 3.5 sacks. He was also selected to the 2013 All-Pac 12 Second Team at DE.

ROUND 7

With the 8th pick in Round 7 (200th overall), the Vikings select:

CB - Marcus Williams, North Dakota State - 5'11" 195lbs.

A four year starter, Williams totaled more than 180 tackles, 35 passes broken up, and more than 18 interceptions over his tenure. Williams also won several awards over his four year college carrer including the FCS All-America Team (Walter Camp, Coaches, and Associated Press). He was also named the 2012 Missouri Valley Footbal Conference Defensive Player of the Year.

WRAP UP

So that's Mock Draft Option 3, showing us taking a QB in the 3rd Round.

In this Option 3 Mock Draft scenario we passed on a QB in Rounds 1 and 2. Our Round 3 selection, Boyd, has shown dual threat skills in the ACC. In this scenario Boyd has the experience to potentially compete for starting time early. I'm not sure if Spielman will wait till the 3rd round to grab a QB, but if it looks like some of the decent QB talent will be around in the 3rd, it would allow for us to pick up high-end talent in a few positions prior to taking a QB. Also, if we pick up a QB in Round 3 that doesn't pan out long term, the impact isn't as great as if we grabbed him in Round 1. If this is the case then we could look to the 2015 draft to grab a potentail franchis QB (e.g., Marcus Mariota). This scenario would be frustrating, but if we don't land a franchise QB in 2014, we will obviously have to look to the 2015 draft for a long-term solution. At least in this scenario we are able to fill needs in other positions with top end talent in the interum (e.g., a "defensive quarterback" like C.J. Mosley).

Stay tuned for my Mock Draft Option 4 to follow this posting, it also shows us taking a QB in Round 3.

Let me know what you think of this Mock Draft Option 3.
