Brief Optimistic History On George Edwards

George Edwards has had mixed success in the NFL. He was a 4 year letterman at Duke, 2 time special team captain and an all ACC linebacker in 1989. Among his successes as an assistant at the college ranks was developing Richard Seymour and Marcus Stroud at Georgia, both were first round picks in 2001. He was then promoted to the NFL ranks as the linebackers coach of the Dallas Cowboys from 1998 till 2001 were he coached Dexter Coakley to his first 2 pro bowls (he went to a third shortly after Edwards left).

In 2002, Edwards moved on to the Washington Redskins under the title of Assistant Defensive Coordinator/Linebackers coach. Lavar Arington had his best season that year, and all 3 linebackers in Washington surpassed 100 tackles that season under his tutelage. The Next year he was promoted to defensive coordinator in Washington. He did no have much success as a defensive coordinator in his one year with Washington in that position, but that could be due to Steve Spurior's head coaching, and losing Darrel Green who was a huge part of the defense for decades. He then moved to the Browns as a linebacker coach and was joined their by guys like Chuck Pagano, Todd Bowles, and Rob Chudzinski. The Browns were a mess that season, and Edwards went to Miami to become the linebackers coach in Miami with Nick Saban. A testament to his coaching ability in Miami is that he was one of 2 members of the entire coaching staff retained after Cam Cameron was fired in 2007. He left Miami to become the Defensive coordinator at Florida, a position he held for a few weeks before he was hired to be Buffalo's defensive coordinator in 2010.

Buffalo's defense was horrible under Edwards, but it may not be his fault. They did lack talent, and Buddy Nix tried to change the defense from a 4-3 to a 3-4. Nix also implemented a major overhaul of players on the defense. The complete change left things messy and its hard to blame Edwards for their struggles. In 2012 he went back to the Dolphins as the linebacker coach.

Now Edwards is here as a defensive coordinator. He will not be implementing a switch form a 4-3 to a 3-4 defense. With players like Floyd, Rhodes, Griffen, Smith, Robison, and more we have talent on the defense. Zimmer will have control of the defense presumably. We have a lot of questions at linebacker and having a guy like Edwards and his history of coaching linebackers up should really help this defense.

heres hoping we get this defense tightened up with Zimmer and Edwards! Skol!
