This posting includes Option 1 of 4 Options I have developed. My strategy with the 4 Mock Drafts is to take a look at how it may play out with the Vikings drafting a QB in at least one of the first four picks we have in this years draft. Each Mock Draft option has a QB being selected one round later than the previous Mock Draft.

I used typical draft-site resources to do the research on the picks (e.g., NFL DraftScout, DraftTek, WalterFootball, DraftSite, etc.) including the player draftpool and the projected rounds in which they will potentially be available. I also based the picks on what seems to be the concensus in regards to our most pressing team needs.

So here we go, Mock Draft Option 1 is below.

With the 8th pick in round 1 the Vikings select:

QB - Johnny Manziel, Texas A&M - 6'1" 200lbs.

A two-year starter, Manziel completed 69 percent of his passes in 2013 for 3,732 yards with 33 touchdowns and 13 interceptions. He ran for 846 yards (686 net) with eight scores. Manziel was a 2013 All-SEC First Team selection at QB.

(Optional Round 1 QB picks would most likely include Blake Bortles from UCF and Derek Carr from Fresno State - Bridgewater will most likely be gone by pick #8. Bortles seems to be preferred as an alternate QB pick over Carr at this time.)

With the 8th pick in Round 2 (40th overall), the Vikings select:

DE - Trevor Reilly, Utah - 6'4" 245lbs.

A three year starter, Reilly recorded 100 tackles with 8.5 sacks, 16 tackles for a loss, two passes broken up, one interception and one forced fumble in 2013. Reilly was a 2013 All-Pac-12 First Team selection at DE.

With the 8th pick in Round 3 (72nd overall), the Vikings select:

CB - E.J. Gaines, Missouri - 5’10" 190lbs.

A three year starter, in 2013 Gaines totalled 68 tackles with four interceptions and two passes defended. Gaines was selected to the 2013 All-SEC First Team at CB.

ROUND 3 (2nd pick in Round 3)

With the 32nd pick in Round 3 (96th overall - Seahawks pick gained from the 2013 Percy Harvin trade), the Vikings select:

DT - Daniel McCullers, Tennessee - 6’6" 377lbs.

A three year starter and big presence in the middle, in 2013 McCullers totalled 33 tackles with 4.5 tackles for a loss, one pass batted and .5 sacks.

With the 8th pick in Round 4 (104th overall), the Vikings select:

OG - Ryan Groy, Wisconsin - 6'5" 318lbs.

Groy is a 2 year starter who was selected to the 2013 All-Big 10 First Team at OG.

With the 8th pick in Round 5 (136th overall), the Vikings select:

ILB - Max Bullough, Michigan State - 6'2" 252lbs.

A three year starter, Bullough had 76 tackles with nine tackles for a loss, 1.5 sacks and two passes broken up in 2013. Bullough was selected to the 2013 All-Big 10 First Team at ILB.

With the 8th pick in Round 6 (168th overall), the Vikings select:

OLB - Jonathan Brown, Illinois - 6’1" 235lbs.

A three year starter, Brown totalled 119 tackles, 15 tackles for a loss, four passes batted, an interception, a forced fumble and four sacks in 2013. Brown was selected to the 2013 ALL-Big 10 Third Team at OLB.

With the 8th pick in Round 7 (200th overall), the Vikings select:

SS - C.J. Barnett, Ohio State - 6’0” 205lbs.

A three year starter, Barnett has totalled 79 tackles with five passes broken up and three interceptions in 2013. Barnett recieved a 2013 All-Big 10 Honorable Mention at SS.

So that's Mock Draft Option 1, showing us taking a QB in Round 1.

From the press chatter I've seen after the bowl season it's possible that the top 4 QB's projected as Round 1 prospects (Bridgewater, Bortles, Manziel, and Carr) could be gone by the time we make our selection at #8 in Round 1. With 5 of the 7 teams picking before us needing a QB, we may miss out in Round 1 but we certainly don't want to reach for one if the talent isn't there.

Stay tuned for my next three Mock Draft Options to follow this posting, they show us taking QB's in later rounds.

Let me know what you think of this Mock Draft Option 1.
