As I sit here and think about who/what we should do with the 8th draft pick, my heart says pick the best D player available, my gut says pick the best QB available, but my brain says Rick Spielman is on the phone w/ many teams trying to receive a ransom for pick 8.
As we have know Rick to move up, down, left, and right during draft day, in my eyes every team in the NFL would love to move down and acquire picks. But who does it better then Rick Spielman? Shafting the browns to move up 1 spot and pick a running back they 1 year later, trade away to the Colts. Deals with the Patriots to pick up Flash, and trading away Percy for a #1 pick on Xavier Rhodes.
Rick is a magician in talking to people about giving up draft day picks. But he also has bombed on a few with Mcnabb, Moss, and I may be in minority here......but in my eyes NOT trading Toby Gerhart this past season was a fail as well. Jumping in the 2nd round to pick up Toby, in my eyes, was a disaster. But you live and learn.
Now, as we all know Christian Ponder was a reach. We did not trade up, nor trade down to get him at 12, however I am just expressing my thoughts on how draft choices can be a BUST (CP7) or BOOM (CP84). I'm not a fan of risking the entire future......Redskins.........for a "mobile QB" that had a ACL injury already, but we do need a franchise QB. I realize they are very few and far between, but I like the fact that the 'skins took 2 QB's in the draft with RGIII. Do they have MANY holes that needed filled? Absolutely. Could they trade Cousins for a 3rd rounder and flip it into a 2nd if that specific team wins 8 games or more? I believe so. Could it be the Vikings that do that? Maybe, maybe not. I hope not, but who knows.
Flipping QB's for higher the original draft picks should be the a idea the Vikings should take note of. Ryan Mallet comes to mind. With all the talk lately (which I would absolutely love) is the Vikings trading for Ryan Mallet. I liked the kid in the draft he came out of. He has had some time to sit behind some guy named Tom Brady to learn technique, to learn the NFL speed, and to learn when to live to play another down. I would love to see Mallet in purple, but not for any future picks in the draft. I would give up a 3rd this year for him. Gambling future draft picks should NEVER be the norm for any team....however when you have a need at position such as QB for example, if current draft ammo is at there disposal, FIRE AWAY.
Now I realize I have gotten a bit de-railed on my topic of trading back, but hear me out. This year we have pick 8. Pick 8 that could possibly be one of the best, or possibly be one of the worst. With 4 QB's "projected", and I use that term loosely, taken before us at 8, that usually means 1 to possibly 3 blue chip players fall in the draft. Clowney, Kalil Mack, Mathews, or my favorite.......Watkins. May favorite to fall in the draft is Watkins. He is a dynamic WR that has been linked to the most explosive WR's like Green and Julio. He is a bit shorter then Green and Julio, but he has the ball skills to completely dominate a game. Megatron domination? Nope, but come on.....who does?
Here is 2 scenarios that I would love to see pan out.
With the Vikings coming on the clock at 8, I hope to see the words "Trade" come across the screen on ESPN. Our Minnesota Vikings trade with the ........wait for it...........waaaaaaait for it.................the Tennessee Titans.
Yes, the Tennessee Titans trade up to 8 to select Watkins in the 2014 NFL draft.
After all the hoopla of the commentators praising the Titans on drafting the young kid out of Clemson, the cameras point directly on Rick Spielman as he smokes his Stogie and accepts the #11 pick, the Titans 2nd round pick, a 4th round pick as well as a 3 round next year in 2015.
With the Vikings on the clock at 8, I hope to see the words "Trade" come across the screen on ESPN. Our Minnesota Vikings trade with the.......wait for it........waaaaaaaaaait for it.........The St. Louis Rams.
Yes, the St. Louis Rams trade up to 8 to select Watkins in the 2014 NFL Draft.
After all the hoopla of the commentators praising the St Louis Rams on drafting the young kid out of Clemson, the cameras point directly to Rick Spielman as he smokes his Stogie and receives the #13 pick, a 2nd rounder this year, a 3rd rounder this year, a 6th rounder this year, a 2nd rounder next year AND a 3rd rounder next year.
These scenarios are 1 of many that could dreamed up in the front office of 31 other teams in the NFL. These dream come true scenarios has happened w/ Julio and the Falcons AND will happen again in the near future of the NFL draft.
Our Vikings can not only take draft picks from teams by trading back from 8 this year, but also STILL get their QB they want in the 1st round if one of them falls.
They could trade for a 3rd for Mallet and w/ this scenario, STILL improve on draft picks.
Let's sit back and allow this to sink in. Trading back and picking the Vikings QB or picking the best D player available is my hopes. Picking a tall press DB to pair up with Xavier is my hopes. Shutting down Megatron, Jeffery and Marshall should be #1 priority with Coach Zimmer now as head coach. Filling holes with the trade back draft selections and improving at QB is a main priority. The Colts turned it around, so can our Minnesota Vikings.
