The [fantastic] signing of Linval Joseph takes NT out of the running for our 1st rd pick. There are still FAs to be had, but several of the best have found homes on other teams.
Looking at the draft as things stand right now, our needs are pretty clear-cut -- and odds are our first pick will be either QB, LB or CB. But what if we surprise everyone with a pick out of left field??
Enter: Notre Dame offensive lineman Zack Martin.
Martin is typically in the discussion with offensive tackles, so you probably haven't paid too much attention to him. But through all the hubbub, there is a frequent mention of Martin kicking inside and potentially having more success at OG in the NFL.
Mike Mayock recently said he can play any position on the line, and projects him to go around the 20th overall pick.
And Bucky Brooks noted, "He did well against the edge rushers. He surprised me with the way he played against some of the elite rushers. Everybody knows he's a really good tackle, but he could be a Pro Bowl guard." (Senior Bowl Exec Director Phil Savage corroborated this, saying that many scouts also feel the same way.)
(As if you needed more convincing, but we're down on our Golden Domer quota.)
Obviously there are other OG prospects in the 2nd rd that will be great starters in the league -- but I just want to throw out the possibility of trading back 5 or 10 spots, acquiring at least an extra 2nd rdr, and drafting Martin to be our starting Left Guard.
A mini-mock, you ask?? Sure, why not!! I posted a similar mock in another thread recently, but this will be my official "Reach" Edition:
Trade back from #8 to #16 (thank you, Jerry Jones); also acquiring #47 and #206 (via CHI) from Dallas. 10 picks, just like Darth Spielman wanted...
#16 - OL Zack Martin
#40 - QB Jimmy Garoppolo
#47 - LB Telvin Smith
#72 - CB Pierre Desir
#96 - DT Caraun Reid
#104 - TE C.J. Fiedorowicz
#136 - QB Connor Shaw
#168 - TRADE FOR 2015 5TH RDR
#200 - LB Denicos Allen (transition to SS)
#206 - P Joe Mama
What say you, DN??
