My strategy was to accumulate more picks than I started with while still drafting guys I think could really help up. I used a draft simulator because otherwise I feel it’s just about who I want and I usually don’t get very realistic in that department. Though I know those simulators are not perfect, they do add an element of realism. I’m sorry I did not document my exact trades but I ended up trading back in the first to pick up an extra 2nd round and extra 3rd round. Then I traded back my later 2nd round pick something like 7 spots while picking up an additional 3rd round pick, and giving away my 4th. This left me with a first round pick, 2 2nd round picks, 4 third round picks, no 4th and then 1 pick for all the rest of the rounds.
ILB C.J. MOSLEY
I was confident I could still land Mosley in the first after trading back. My top picks would be Bridgewater or Mack, but I think they will be both gone by that time. I think Mosley will be a very good player for a long time, his instincts mixed with the amazing student of the game he is reported to being make me want him so much. He is talked about being an amazing leader as well.
G XAVIER SU’A-FILO
I badly wanted to land Xavier, he is big, mean and has produced. I think he would solidify our line and make it an incredible strength of ours for years to come.
WR KELVIN BENJAMIN
I know, people are going, "what? We don’t need a WR as much as other positions." I agree, I was trying to find a way to get the CB Kyle Fuller, but that was just too much of a pipe dream. Out of the guys available Kelvin made sense. To me we could use him as a WR and a TE. He has the size of a TE being 6’5, 240 lbs but is faster than most TEs with a 4.6 40. We have Rudolph who I see as the more all around guy and then Rhett who’s more of the power type of TE. This guy could help with the WRs and would be a huge target on short yardage situations and in the endzone.
RB TRE MASON
Again, not a spot of the biggest need but a spot of need none the less. Tre was a steal at this spot so I took him.
DE JACKSON JEFFCOAT
I like Jeffcoat, I think he would add nice depth to our DE group. He's 6'3 250 lbs, so he might need to put on some muscle and if he can do that with keeping his athleticism it would be great. He has a 36 inch vertical and 4.63 40 yard dash!
S TERRENCE BROOKS
I know Terrence is a converted CB and played some slot coverage roles and we just signed Captain but I love the idea of having speed at the safety position. He is undersized but we got our big hard hitting safety in Smith and Terrence has a 4.42 40. He also plays bigger than his height would suggest at 5’11. Covering that slot role he played almost like a LB at times and didn’t shy away from contact and liked getting involved in the run game.
QB ZACH METTENBERGER
Here’s the elephant in the room. Drafting Zach Mettenberger, I like this prospect, especially with Ponder and Cassel still on the roster. I don’t think either are the answer but they can both at least play serviceably and we have a new coordinator that might get more use out of either QB. I think he would fit well with Norv as well with his "rocket arm."
DT DAQUAN JONES
Giant DT, I know we just got Joseph but as we know, big men get tired. This guy would help us keep fresh feet in the game while still getting a big nose tackle that eats up blocks.
CB BENNETT JACKSON
I like that Bennett is 6’0 and has decent speed with his 4.51 40. At this point I am just looking for value and I think he was a good pick here.
TE JOE DON DUNCAN
Best guy available in the 7th and in a position of sort of need so I took him. He did the bench 35 times at 225 and he’s reported to be deceptively athletic. Again, just looking for value at this point.
There you have it. Maybe I am just a glutton for punishment but I am very excited this year, cannot wait to see that Purple and Gold take the field in 2014!!!!
