Getting close to the draft, I like to check out the highlight videos of some potential first round Viking picks. This year I've been focusing on the quarterbacks and was blown away by how good Zach Mettenberger is. I think the rep on him is that he has a cannon, but is slow and stares down his targets. But I was really impressed by his accuracy. He consistently slings the ball where only the receiver can get it as seen in the 2012 Alabama game. He has great vision- look how consistently he gets receptions to closely defended receivers because he sees that a well placed ball cannot be defended. Sometimes he can do this because he has the accuracy and arm power to sling the ball outside. But he also has the feel to throw it high when the defense is flatfooted or behind the receiver when necessary. The highlight videos from the other best quarterbacks have few, if any, examples of this. I read one scouting report which questioned whether these were inaccurate throws covered up by good receivers. I really don't think there's a question given the consistency (unlike Manziel who was frequently bailed out by Mike Evans). His numbers in the SEC last year were very impressive:
65% CMP, 22TD, 8INT in by far the best defensive conference. His completion percentage is consistent on all three downs (unlike Blake Bortles).
Blake Bortles: 68%, 25TD, 9INT.
Teddy Bridgewater: 71%, 31TD, 4INT.
Bridgewater looks good here by comparison. But in his highlights I'm only impressed by his ability to be accurate on the run, which he doesn't do very much. He isn't making plays, just taking what's given to him. He doesn't always have the touch to get the ball where he wants: he especially struggles on vertical routes from the slot position because the target area is smaller and the receiver often won't be able to change direction to get to the ball. Just to be clear, he is consistent and accurate and it would be an upgrade if we got him at 8. He just doesn't have the playmaking ability you see from the top-10 qbs.
Is is just me or is Zach Mettenberger really good?
(Outside of Khalil Mack who likely won't be available I'm not sure who else I'd take at 8. But I do not like Justin Gilbert. He is a truly awful tackler- worse than Chris Cook- and unwilling. And he's not very agile- struggles with routes underneath. He's dominant on deep routes. But no one is going to go deep against him. He should probably be a receiver. Favorite CB is Verret from Washington.)
