"For the goal of building a team, would it be better to draft a QB first- even in a yr of crappy choices with either FA or draft? Or would it be better to build a team first & add the right QB as the finishing touch?"
My opinion is that it would be a better idea to trade down & acquire more players to build with.
1) I believe that the QB is indeed the most important member of the team and as such, efforts should be taken to choose the RIGHT QB rather than keep choosing & hoping to get the right one. If a team keeps choosing, the chances are that it will end up with a situation like the Vikings last yr: Start with the crappy Ponder, move to the crappy Cassel, & pay even more money for the unknown Freeman. The Vikings would have been better off building the rest of the team, then picking someone in the 2012 draft; they might have even gotten Luck or someone better than Ponder/this draft's QBs.
2) Unlike quite a few fans of various teams- Cowboys, Vikings, & others- I absolutely do NOT agree with the premise that the most important rounds are the first 2 or 3 & almost disregard the others. My opinion is closer to the opposite: That although the first round or two is important, it's really the later rounds that make the difference. In addition, I believe that with the right GM/coaching staff, the best idea is just to get "more darts to throw at the board". My view is that with Rodgers as QB, he can take almost anyone- even UDFAs- and make a playoff contending team out of them. The only exception is in the O-line- that I do believe needs high picks to make it a quality line. (I do have to admit, though, that the drafting of Lacy has made me reconsider that a bit.)
As an aside, one concept that I read on one team's page- I forget which one- pointed out the Patriots strategy over several years' time to trade down in the draft not just for later picks in the current draft but for quality picks in the next year's draft. This strategy struck me as really wise & playing the future over the present; I would really love to see TT do that in at least some cases.
So, am I crazy? Or are these good ideas? Tell me!!!!!!
