A Case for a Later Round QB

Doesn’t the old adage about NFL QB’s go "if you have a quarterback competition, you don’t have a franchise quarterback"?

Well, this year’s QB class reminds me of exactly that. The class this year has all the pundits torn between one of three or potentially four quarterbacks being the best in the class. There is no sure bet franchise QB sitting out there to be plucked from the college ranks to lead our team to the Promised Land. You could even trade up to the number one pick and at best get your personal favorite, but not a consensus top flight pick, such as Andrew Luck, Peyton Manning or John Elway.

This makes me wonder if we are not planning to bypass all of the quarterback 1st round hype and pick the best LB available, whether that is Mack, Barr, or Mosley. After all, it is the most glaring position of need on the team that we didn’t make a free agency move on other than signing a CFL standout, which is a strategy we have tried before with nothing to show. And I would hope that if it is Mosley, we would be able to trade down to pick up additional picks.

There is another old adage that goes "if you can’t get quality, get quantity". I’m not too against this approach this year with regards to our QB situation. And if one of those is from a late round trade of Ponder for a pick, even better. Where there is no pick the NFL experts agree is the top QB, most agree that the position is one of depth in this draft, so put together the big board, grade the prospects and be ready to grab two as they fall to us in the draft starting in the second round. No reaching, but maybe a little jockeying around via trade, as per normal Spielman protocol.

I believe this allows us to keep from reaching for a franchise QB that might not be there and increase our odds of getting a player at the position that can lead us to that elusive title in the next couple years.

Guys like Carr, Garoppolo, McCarron, Mettenberger, Murray, Savage, Fales, Smith, Shaw, Thomas and Boyd all have popped up in posts on our site as potential picks to run our offence. So between a couple of them, maybe Turner can find the one.

And if not, there is always next year.
