The Vikings have been slowly remade since Rick Spielman became General Manager in 2012.
As we look ahead to OTAs this year, with 90 players on the roster, the Vikings have one player left from the Tice era (2001-2005), and twenty from the Childress era (2006-2011).
The Vikings have one player left on the roster from the 2006 draft (Greenway), two players from the 2007 draft (Peterson and Robison), one player from the 2008 draft (Sullivan), and one undrafted free agent from 2004 (Loeffler). Fred Evans signed with the Vikings in 2007 after being drafted the previous year by the Dolphins. The 2009 draft still gives the Vikings three players (Loadholt, Brinkley (re-signed), and Sanford). Remarkably, the Vikings retain only one player from the 2010 draft (Griffin). One free agent from 2010 remains a Viking (Sherels). There are four current Vikings from the 2011 draft (Ponder, Rudolph, Raymond, and Fusco). Five free agents who signed in 2011 remain with the team (Charlie Johnson, Joe Berger, Andrew Sendejo, Larry Dean, and Allen Reisner)..
There are several players whom the Vikings drafted in 2011 or before and are currently on other teams' rosters: C.J. Mosley (defensive lineman, Lions), Tarvaris Jackson (Seahawks), Percy Harvin (Seahawks), Sidney Rice (Seahawks), Nate Burleson (Browns), Ryan Cook (Cowboys), Letroy Guion (Packers), Joe Webb (Panthers), Mickey Shuler (Falcons), Chris DeGeare (Cowboys), Brandon Burton (Bengals), DeMarcus Love (Jaguars), Toby Gerhart (Jaguars), and D'Aundre Reed (Jaguars).
Spielman has struck a balance between retaining trusty veterans and introducing fresh newcomers.
