The title gives the basic argument--here's the followup.
I know a little bit about football, but at the end of the day, not a ton. I think that's true of many of us here. Obviously it's way less true of the folks who make their living in the game.
Rick Spielman has done pretty well with his drafting overall, I think. Missing on Ponder was a major error, and if that kind of thing happens again with a QB, well then we have a problem. But otherwise? I think the dude knows his stuff and does his due diligence.
I can't accurately foresee what kind of head coach Mike Zimmer will be, but at this point he seems like he knows what he's doing/has a smart plan (which I totally don't know about), and I trust him to evaluate the overall team needs and give his draft input accordingly. Dude seems on top of it.
Norv Turner knows offense, and I trust him to evaluate QBs properly for his scheme, which will of course be the dude's key role for the early parts of the draft. I, on the other hand, have never even met a really good quarterback (sorry Ryan from high school).
Bottom line? I basically trust these guys. For now. Would I have said the same thing if Leslie Frazier were still the coach, even with Spielman in control of the draft? No. (No offense Les--you're cool.)
So when our first pick comes around, and I'm hoping for whatever I'm hoping for--personally I'd love to get Bridgewater somehow, and I'm worried about waiting too long for a QB--I'm going to go ahead and tell myself to chill, regardless of what the front office does. NO! WE CAN'T TRADE BACK TO THE END OF THE FIRST FOR AN EXTRA PICK, THAT'S TOO FAR TO GET THE RIGHT QB! Chill. WE SELECTED A DAMN DEFENSIVE LINEMEN? WE'RE STACKED THERE! Chill. WHY IN THE HELL DID WE JUST DRAFT A RECEIVER NOT NAMED SAMMY WATKINS WITH THE 8TH PICK? Chill. WHY IS THIS IDIOT TYPING IN ALL CAPS? Chill.
I could well do a 180 on all of these guys by the end of the season, but for now my thinking is this: the Vikings' front office knows what they're doing, I don't really know shit when you get right down to it, so I trust them in this draft and will be happy with whatever they do tomorrow. You may feel otherwise.
