Some of my fellow readers at the Daily Norseman may not be too surprised to discover that they have put our good friend Spielman up at #1 above the likes of John Elway and Bill Belichick. They liked the upgrades he has made to the Vikings so far, especially his aggressiveness when going up to get extra first round picks in recent years. You can go read their words on Rick Spielman as well as the other GM's yourself if you are so inclined by simply paying Bleacher Report a visit right here.
It is also interesting to check out where some other General Managers around the league ended up on the list, especially the rest of the NFC North. Phil Emery of the Chicago Bears came in at #6 on the list mainly for his work to improve the Chicago defense with additions such as former Viking Jared Allen who will always be missed around these parts. Next up on the list was Martin Mayhew of the Detroit Lions at #14 who was questioned a little for his choice to draft Eric Ebron in the draft with all of the other receiving threats they already had, but received an overall positive review. Finally coming in at #22 and last place out of all of the NFC North GM's on the list is Ted Thompson of the Green Bay Packers. He was criticized for his reluctance to look to free agency for talent and for failing to spend draft picks to upgrade a defensive unit that could use some new talent.
It is tough to decide which is better, seeing Spielman up at the top or seeing Ted Thompson at the bottom of the NFC North. In this case I will have to go with Spielman getting some well deserved recognition for all of his work to help make us a better team over the offseason. Now that we are getting closer to the start of training camp it will not be too long before we will find out if all of his hard work will pay off when we finally get to see our 2014 Minnesota Vikings in action. All that is left for us to do as fans now is to sit back, watch, and wildly speculate on
our playoff chances our inevitable Super Bowl appearance.
