Another look at LeSean vs. Adrian

So, after browsing through the Shady vs. AD thread, it got me thinking what do the actual numbers say, and who has the best stats between the two. I decided to add Jamal Charles to the mix as well, because I consider him in the top three, and probably the second best back in the NFL.

I went online and just pulled up basic stats like rushing attempts, yards and average, and also receptions, receiving yards, and yards/catch. I then figured up the total touches, yards from scrimmage, and yards/touch

I decided to go back three years to try and get a good average. Here are my findings

2013

Name: Rush Yards Y/A Catch Yards Y/C Touches Yds/S Y/T

Jamal Charles 256 1287 5.0 70 693 9.9 326 1980 6.07

Lesean McCoy 314 1607 5.1 52 539 10.4 366 2146 5.86

Adrian Peterson 279 1266 4.5 29 171 5.9 308 1437 4.67

2012

Name: Rush Yards Y/A Catch Yards Y/C Touches Yds/S Y/T

Jamal Charles 285 1509 5.3 35 236 6.7 320 1745 5.45

Lesean McCoy 200 840 4.2 54 373 6.9 254 1213 4.78

Adrian Peterson 348 2097 6.0 40 217 5.4 388 2314 5.96

2011

Name: Rush Yards Y/A Catch Yards Y/C Touches Yds/S Y/T

Jamal Charles 12 83 6.9 5 9 1.8 17 92 5.41

Lesean McCoy 273 1309 4.8 48 315 6.6 321 1624 5.06

Adrian Peterson 208 970 4.7 18 139 7.7 236 1109 4.70

Average/year

Name: Rush Yards Y/A Catch Yards Y/C Touches Yds/S Y/T

Jamal Charles 184 960 5.70 37 314 6.13 221 1272 5.64

Lesean McCoy 262 1252 4.70 51 409 7.97 314 1661 5.23

Adrian Peterson 278 1444 5.07 29 176 6.33 311 1620 5.11

Before people get upset that Adrian is at the bottom of the list, I sorted the names alphabetically intentionally. Obviously Jamal Charles didn't play a full year in 2011, I believe it was only a game or two. Also, AD didn't play a full season in 2011 or 2013. That may skew some of the overall totals, but I think the average per year should still be a good indication on how good these guys were.

One thing that caught my eye was that Jamal Charles has a higher yards/attempt over the last three years than Peterson. If Charles hadn't been injured for most of 2011 and had the same rushing attempts, then he probably would have better rushing numbers than Peterson. Also, if you take his two healthy seasons, he has higher yards/catch as well. You can't discount the fact that he missed that many games though, because being available is very important and should come into play when talking about the best at a specific position.

If somebody has better, or more relevant stats, feel free to share them in the comments. Based on these stats here, I would rank these guys if I wasn't being biased as Jamal Charles #1, Adrian Peterson #2, and LeSean McCoy #3.

LeSean gets the benefit of playing in a good offensive scheme, and with a mobile QB. That should inflate his numbers a bit, so even though he has a better yards/touch, I put him third on this list. Jamal Charles doesn't have much to work with in KC, between terrible QB play prior to last year, and even last year there wasn't much else that truly threatened the defense but Charles. We all know what AD's done for this team and what little we've had around him, but it's not like Jamal Charles has been in a better spot himself.

I went into this article expecting Peterson to come to the top, but just by these numbers, Charles is the top as of now. Please don't hate me too much for posting this, I love the Vikings and Peterson is my favorite player, but his numbers just don't match up. I believe that this will be a big year for him, and he will regain the unanimous title of best running back in the NFL after this year, but right now, I'm giving it to Charles
