Matt Cassel or Teddy Bridgewater? (Or CP7...)

mnsportslife.com

Training camp is underway in Mankato and the biggest question on Viking fans’ minds is, who will be under center week 1? Reports from camp indicate that Teddy Bridgewater and Matt Cassel have been splitting first-team reps while 2011 first-round pick, Christian Ponder has been relegated to manning the clipboard as well as an occasional guest appearance as Ragnar during cheer practice. The Vikings have lacked a true threat under center since Brett Favre’s magical 2009 campaign, which resulted in an NFC Championship berth (still bitter at the Saints). At this point, it is still anyone’s guess as to who will be under center for the season opener in St. Louis. Although Matt Cassel took the starting job away from Christian Ponder last season, I don’t think anyone in the Vikings’ front office has any plans to use him more than a few starts at most when the public outcry for Bridgewater will be deafening.

Teddy Bridgewater-Pros

Teddy Bridgewater-Cons

Christian Ponder-Pros

Christian Ponder- Cons

•May turn to modeling at Abercrombie if this whole football thing doesn’t work out

Clearly, Mike Zimmer has quite a difficult decision in front of him. He will be force to choose between the future face of the franchise, Matt "Fanny Pack" Cassel, and Christian "Shoulda accepted that modeling contract like my mom told me to" Ponder. Will coach Zimmer value Bridgewater’s ability to safely guide the football into his own receiver’s hands? Or will he be unable to see past Christian Ponder’s jawline or Matt Cassel’s pocket protector (no, not Matt Kalil)? I really do not envy coach Zimmer’s decision that he faces. If it were me, I would crack under the pressure and resort to calling up Brett Favre for a reunion tour. (I have never seen Cassel in a fanny pack, he just really looks like the kind of guy that used to get beaten up on the playground because of a fanny pack filled with inhalers and calculators.) My prediction is that Matt Cassel will somehow convince Zimmer to give him the start week 1 and will expose him to a schedule that includes the Rams, the Patriots, the Falcons, the Packers, and the Lions in the first six weeks of the season. There is no way in hell that even if Cassel gets to start that he will still be the starting quartback by the end of this brutal stretch. At that time, Teddy Bridgewater will step up and take the reigns and the Vikings will never look back. Zimmer would be wise to immediately turn to the man that Rick Spielman has pegged as the quarterback of the future and avoid falling into a hole that Adrian Peterson will not be able to pull this team out of.
